We offer a hybrid 3-2 work schedule (three days in the office, two days of teleworking) to accommodate the need for flexibility.

Job Summary

The Electric Transmission - System Protection Engineering Data Communications team is seeking a hard-working, motivated, candidate to join our team. The successful candidate will manage and complete substation SCADA projects, utilize Software Defined Networking (SDN) for the implementation of IEC61850 / IEEE6180 standards, develop Human-Machine Interface (HMI) graphics for monitoring and troubleshooting, evaluate new communication devices, research new communication technologies and strategies, and implement the latest cyber security best practices. This is an exciting time to join our team as we are growing to meet the challenge of industry-leading projects and initiatives like interconnecting 5000 MW of solar generation in the next 5 years, the first utility-owned offshore wind project in United States federal waters off the Atlantic coast, STATCOMS, IEC-61850, the largest data center load growth in the world, and Net-Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050.

Job Responsibilities include:

  • Reading substation one-line, functional, elementary, and wiring drawings to determine work to be done, identify possible design issues, and suggest alternatives.

  • Creating/updating configuration files for a wide array of substation communication equipment and software tools and utilizing several industry standard SCADA protocols.

  • Creating/updating configuration files for our Synchrophasor data devices.

  • Programing substation HMI devices

  • Using SDN to build modern, secure IEC 61850-based substation automation systems

  • Testing and troubleshooting communications and data quality/data integrity issues for both SCADA and Synchrophasor data.

  • Using internal data historian applications to create graphs and reports to assist day-to-day activities and troubleshooting.

  • Using internal applications (Telescope/SAP) to track, manage, and update projects.

  • Managing and updating documentation for SCADA and Synchrophasor systems as a means to communicate changes to other groups.

  • Using Microsoft Office Programs (Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Word, Access) to create spreadsheets, documents, and presentations.

  • Assisting with the development and management of the Data Communications Training Program.

  • Performing other duties as requested or assigned.

This role is located in Glen Allen, VA and works a hybrid schedule currently. Relocation assistance may be offered to the successful candidate.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Engineer I: 0-2 years of relevant engineering experience

Engineer II : 3+ years of relevant engineering experience

Engineer III: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience

Engineering Technical Specialist I : 0-2 years of relevant experience and competencies in applicable discipline.

Engineering Technical Specialist II : 3+ years of relevant experience and demonstrated competencies in applicable discipline.

Engineering Technical Specialist III : 5+ years of relevant experience and demonstrated competencies in applicable discipline.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, & Experience for all roles and levels:

• Knowledge of electrical engineering theories and principles.

• Strong oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).

• Strong personal computer skills.

• Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices.

• Experience with various computer applications, with the ability to manipulate personal computer applications and perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Excel, etc.).

• Capable of moving easily between programming languages and technology paradigms.

• Understanding of contemporary relational and time-series database technologies.

• Equally effective working independently or in team environment.

• Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.

• Strong planning, organizational and project management skills.

• Strong abstract thinking and problem-solving capabilities.

• Comfortable communicating with engineers, customers, and executives, alike Excels at self-education and quickly adopting new skills and knowledge.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

Though not required, extra consideration will be taken with candidates who possess any of the following skillsets:

• Knowledge of IT systems and/or networking fundamentals (e.g., TCP, UDP, IP, Firewalls/Routers/Switches, Fiber Optics, Windows, Linux, Remote Desktop, Telnet, SSH, FTP).

• Knowledge and experience with IEC61850 / IEEE6180 (GOOSE, Samples Values, MMS, PTP)

• Knowledge of system protection philosophies and applications

• Experience in HMI Development

• Experience with SDN concepts

• Experience with SSNET, ESNET, Power Systems Center

• Experience with SEL Devices (SEL-3530, SEL-3332, SEL-3354, SEL-3355, SEL-3555)

• Electrical Utility Industry experience.

Education Requirements

Education Level: Bachelor's degree in Engineering minimum.

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA:

For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:

  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or

  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
