Job Summary

Dominion Energy Virginia’s Electric Transmission (ET) System Protection Engineering department is seeking an Electrical Engineer to support the Company’s evolving grid. Primary responsibilities for this role include the design, modeling, and development of protective relay settings for up to 69kV equipment.

Job Responsibilities – Engineer I:

Learn basic protection philosophy and applications to real-world scenarios.

Develop protective relay settings and perform circuit calculations for protection schemes inside the substation.

Provide technical assistance to engineering and field teams to develop the protection and control design package; and provide technical support to conceptual engineering, project management, and ET Field Organization teams throughout capital projects.

Job Responsibilities – Engineer II:

Engineer I duties above but distinguished from Engineer I by increased complexity in application of engineering skills required, review of protective relay settings, and provide advanced technical support.

Participate in company teams and industry-level organizations to enhance system protection performance, participate in trade and industry organizations, and other activities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:

Engineer I : 0-2+ years of engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A an advanced degree can count as one year experience)

  • Basic understanding of AC/DC fundamentals

  • Basic understanding of the principles of transmission and/or distribution applications a plus

Engineer II: 3+ years of relevant engineering experience or demonstrated equivalent (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A an advanced degree can count as one year experience)

  • Solid understanding of AC/DC fundamentals

  • Understanding of 3 phase power systems is a strong plus.

  • Understanding of the principles of transmission and/or distribution applications is strongly preferred

Knowledge and application of engineering theories and principles, concepts, and fundamentals;

Requires developmental experience in a professional engineering position;

Competency in applying engineering principles, fundamental concepts, practices and procedures requiring some evaluation, originality and/or ingenuity to achieve project objectives;

Understands and can apply knowledge of configuration management;

Ability to perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Matlab, Excel, etc.);

Planning, organizational and project management skills;

Ability to develop and exercise leadership skills;

Effective decision making skills;

Effective oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing);

Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems;

Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices;

Equally effective working independently or in a team environment;

Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA:

For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:

Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or

Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.

Education Requirements

Bachelor

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

For Nuclear purposes only: ANSI 3.1-2014, Section 4.6.1 ( must be documented on form HR-AA-101)

Education: Baccalaureate degree in Engineering or related science(Physics, Chemistry, Math, Engineering Technology acceptable if all other pieces of the third prong of the Required Engineering Criteria listed in KSA section are met).

Minimum Experience for the position:

Related experience which shall include 2 yrs; Nuclear power plant experience to include 1 yr.

(Please note: Exception to related experience may be made for Engineer I level as work is completed under direct supervision)
