Engineering a world of possibilities The Labriola Innovation Hub, Metals and Wood Shop, at Colorado School of Mines (Mines) is hiring for an Assistant Manager. The Labriola Innovation Hub is a newly constructed, state of the art, 40,000 sq-ft hub and resource for projects and prototyping. It includes a metal shop and wood shop to support hands-on and project-based learning. Projects range from coursework to personal projects to entrepreneurial projects and the space is for all Mines students, staff, and faculty. The space is also designed to support instruction for Cornerstone, First-Year Honors, and Capstone design courses for all degree programs. The Labriola Innovation Hub Metals & Wood shops are not production shops.

This position exists to assist the existing shop manager in 1) overseeing the operations and maintenance of the metal & wood shops in support of instructional classes that use the shops and extend current shop hours, 2) recruiting, training and managing a team of student assistants to support shop operations and student learning in the Shops, 3) supporting the development of machine training and workshops, and 4) supporting Entrepreneurship & Innovation programs that utilize the Labriola Innovation Hub, specifically leading support for E&I partner access to the Shops.

Responsibilities:

The Labriola Innovation Hub Assistant Shop Manager reports to the Labriola Innovation Hub Shop Manager. The Assistant Shop Manager will be fairly autonomous and work independently on some efforts and in conjunction with the Shop Manager on others. This position will work a second shift in the Shops, 12-8pm, or a combination of later shift and weekend hours as desired, in order to extend the Innovation Hub Shop access.

The Assistant Shop Manager supports all operational aspects of the Shop in support of its educational mission including safety, user training, and site and equipment service and maintenance. The Assistant Shop Manager is also jointly responsible for daily operations, reporting, safety and compliance, and facilitating a safe and clean environment conducive to the educational mission of the Labriola Innovation Hub. The Assistant Manager will take the lead on stock and material ordering and management and will lead coordination of external membership training and access. Specific duties include:

Labriola Innovation Hub Metals & Wood Shop Management, Safety and Support - 55% Maintain a safe and clean shop environment for all users. Provide supervision, oversight, and instruction of students and faculty performing class-related projects that require fabrication. Ensure that the necessary equipment, materials, and supplies needed in the Shop are functional and available to students and faculty. In coordination with the Shop Manager, lead purchasing of new tools and equipment as needed. Maintain budget reports and assist Shop Manager with annual expense tracking. Assist the current shop manager in keeping the shops regularly supervised and open, supplemented by student worker support. The shift schedule of the Assistant Shop Manager will help keep the shop open at least an additional 15 hours per week except when those times conflict with holidays and campus closures. Assist in ensuring all equipment is working effectively and efficiently; coordinate service on equipment as needed. Continuously maintain and improve Shop organization and flow; maximize space utilization in the Shop. Ensure that tools and tooling needed for coursework and projects are available for student and faculty use. Coordinate with the Shop Manager to continuously improve and upgrade Shop practices, equipment, and tooling to align with manufacturing and industry best practices. Assist in recruiting, hiring, training, an supervising student leads and student workers in the shop. The Assistant Shop Manager will directly supervise 2-5 student workers. Collaborate with the Labriola Innovation Hub Director, Makerspace Operations Manager, Shop Manager, and Program Coordinator in creating an inclusive and accessible culture within the Labriola Innovation Hub for all staff and users. Manage priority of use and workflow on the Shop floor at times of high usage.

Labriola Innovation Hub Instructional and E&I Partner Support - 40% Lead coordination between E&I partner access to the Labriola Innovation Hub Wood and Metal Shop. In conjunction with Director and Shop Manager, collaborate with Beck Venture Center and Mines Finance, Administration, and Operations offices to track and support partnership agreements. Collaborate with the Labriola Innovation Hub Director, Makerspace Operations Manager, Shop Manager, Program Coordinator, and Mines faculty in various departments regularly to coordinate Shop support of coursework in undergraduate curriculum. Coordinate reservation and use of shop space when required by course labs or other activities. Support the delivery and supervision of instructional material for courses such as EDNS 151 Cornerstone Design, EDNS 291 Design Unleashed, Innov8x, and EDNS491/492 Capstone Senior Design. Support other undergraduate design courses as needed. Assist students and faculty with class projects and Capstone Senior Design projects. Conduct drawing reviews and review CAM/G-code to allow for major equipment usage. Troubleshoot and review student CAD drawings, MasterCAM/Fusion360 programs, and G-code conversions for CNC machining. Support grant or proposal writing efforts to support Shop and/or Labriola Innovation Hub initiatives.

Other duties as assigned - 5% On occasion, this position may be assigned other duties needed to help drive to the vision, fulfill the mission, and uphold Mines' and the Department's organizational values.
