SUMMARY

Is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, re-assessment and documentation of care for patients undergoing surgery, outpatient and inpatient care as well. The Registered Nurse provides care to patients in developmental stages ranging from newborn through geriatrics. The Registered Nurse bears full and ultimate responsibility for the quality of nursing care he or she provides to individuals. The Registered Nurse is expected to adhere to accepted standards of nursing practice, functions within the role expectations of the Operating Room, delegate duties to other care giver as required and consistently provided appropriate supervision.

Gouverneur Hospital is certified for 25 beds and services include inpatient detox, substance use disorder rehabilitation, emergency care, imaging and EKG's, physical therapy, and respiratory therapy.

STATUS: Per diem

LOCATION: Gouverneur Hospital

DEPARTMENT: Surgical Services

SCHEDULE: 8-hour variable shifts

ATTRIBUTES

  • Required: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Required: Basic nursing skills with added education surgical procedures and surgical procedures being performed. Demonstrates knowledge of anesthetic agents and basic understanding of the various stages of anesthesia from induction through recovery. Knowledge and training for providing care to patients from pediatrics to geriatrics. Performance of testing for required outpatient procedures.
  • Required: Current, unrestricted New York State registered professional nursing license, must be ACLS certified.
  • Preferred: BSN or BS in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Preferred: National certification in a nursing specialty (AORN)
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs a comprehensive patient assessment to identify patient needs. Performs testing, care and interventions specific to each patient and needs.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive, individualized plan of care.
  • Implements the plan of care utilizing the following interventions:
  • Protect the patient from injury caused by chemical, laser, positioning, thermal sources and extraneous objects.
  • Perform count procedures in accordance with policy to protect patient from retained foreign objects.
  • Perform interventions to assure correct patient, correct site, side and level.
  • Manage the patient's specimens appropriately.
  • Administer medications appropriately
  • Perform interventions to protect the patient from infection.
  • Perform interventions to maintain the patient's normothermia throughout the perioperative period.
  • Perform interventions to maintain the patient's base-line physical status
  • Provide culturally competent, age-appropriate, ethical care within scope of practice.
  • Protect the patient's rights and dignity.
  • Preoperative and postoperative care of the patient
  • Cross training to circulate and scrub cases as needed
  • Cross training in the PACU/recovery room nurse role
  • Cross training in outpatient testing areas
  • Cross training throughout departments to assist with day to day needs of the facility
  • Collaborates effectively with other disciplines.
  • Maintain required competencies, education and training to perform all tasks.
  • Act as a patient advocate and maintain privacy of all appropriate information
  • Use problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with team members.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.

PAY RANGE: $38.86 - $53.11

The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for successful applicants. It may be modified in the future. Pay is determined by factors including experience, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
