Corewell Health Nurse Tech Neuro ICU in Grand Rapids, Michigan

About this unit:

The Neuro Critical Care Unit is a 14 bed Intensive care in the Meijer Heart Center at Butterworth hospital. The Neuro ICU is part of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at the Medical Center, and it is West Michigan’s largest stroke center. We specialize in the care of patients with stroke or other neurological conditions. These conditions include Hemorrhagic stroke, Ischemic stroke, seizures, and Hydrocephalus with critical care needs. Our nurses are part of a collaborative team and work alongside our nurse techs, intensivists, APPs, pharmacists, therapists, social workers, chaplains, and secretaries to provide specialized care to everyone. This team of nurses has worked to develop a culture of collaboration, kindness, teamwork, and learning. Nurses stay because they love the people they work with and in turn, have a very low turnover rate. ​

Our other sites are outpatient imaging departments.

Scope of work

Responsibilities include taking vitals, checking blood sugars, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization and acting as a safety attendant for patients. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.

Acts as a team member in the delivery of quality patient within our clinics alongside RN’s/Providers. Performs basic skills per department guidelines and communicates observations to members of the health care team. Collects and reports physiological, psychological, sociocultural and spiritual needs of patients and families in coordination with and as delineated by the RN or Provider. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.

Orientation

Anticipated start date for ICU Units is either March 11th or April 8th.

Orientation begins the first week of employment and requires these training classes:

  • Monday:

  • Day 1 - NT Foundations 1 – 0800-1630 ALL New Hire NTs are required.

  • Tuesday:

  • NT Foundations 2 0800-1200: ALL NEW HIRE NTS are required.

  • NT Basic Skills 1300-1630: All new hire NTs unless exempt due to experience. (Exempt- prior recent hospital NT experience, nursing students who have completed at least one clinical rotation)

  • Wednesday/Friday:

  • NT Sterile technique class 08:00-16:30- all except exempt students (Exempt - nursing students who have completed at least one clinical rotation)

  • 3rd week after start date - Monday- 08:00-16:30 Advanced Safety Care-all new hire NTs are required.

  • Adult Critical Care Class is also required for orienting to this Unit, Tuesday March 26th if starting employment in March. Or Wednesday April 24th if starting employment in April.

Qualifications

  • Required High School Diploma or equivalent

  • AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) Required within 90 days

  • Experience in direct patient care is preferred
