  • Job Summary/Overall Objectives

This position assists the Laboratory Supervisor by monitoring the work of technical and ancillary employees. The Lead Medical Technologist assists in test development, gathering data for management reports and regularly performs the duties of a Medical Technologist, including the accurate performance of routine and advanced testing. Assures compliance with the Independence Health mission and values for providing service excellence.

Essential Job Functions

  • Acts as a liaison for staff to Laboratory leadership as needed. May assist in charge duties in absence of supervisor for lab process & procedures, with staff oversight.

  • Evaluates problems in the absence of the Supervisor and assists with solving those that are possible.

  • Communicates problems with the Laboratory Supervisor, Manager or Director as appropriate.

  • Assists supervisory personnel in the observation and documentation of laboratory staff competency. Completes all assigned duties within the required time frame.

  • All duties of a Medical Technologist Ensures that instrument maintenance and/or function checks are performed and documented accurately, according to procedure.

  • Troubleshoots instrument malfunctions and informs the Laboratory Supervisor, Manager or Director of problems.

  • Reviews QC logs. Documents and brings to the attention of the Laboratory Supervisor, Manager or Director any errors, omissions or discrepancies in QC.

  • Compiles QA data and prepares reports as directed by the Laboratory Supervisor, Manager or Director. Monitors proficiency testing activity and assists the Director with evaluation of results and documentation of responses to deficiencies.

  • Assists the Laboratory Supervisor or Manager with staff scheduling as directed and assists with monitoring attendance.

  • Interacts professionally with other departments.

  • Represents the Laboratory on Hospital committees as needed.

  • Adheres to abnormal and/or critical results reporting policy and turn-around-time policy.

  • Participates in and monitors quality assurance indicators.

  • Adheres to the compliance policy and serves as a resource for staff questions.

  • Adheres to all safety policies as outlined in the Laboratory Safety Manual.

  • Demonstrates awareness of appropriate inventory levels in all relevant sections of the laboratory. Takes action to prevent supply shortages or overages. Performs purchasing of supplies in the absence of the Laboratory Supervisor or Manager as directed.

  • New procedures are mastered within established time frames. Demonstrates awareness of changes in procedures and protocols.

  • Assist with orientation and training assignments in an organized, thorough manner.

  • Serves as a resource to other employees by sharing knowledge of procedures or testing outcomes when consulted.

  • Assist with developing, performing and/or evaluating special projects.

  • Performs test evaluations and validations of new procedures and/or reagent systems.

  • Assist with formulate, author and/or revise procedures according to CLSI guidelines.

  • Assist in preparing and delivering student lectures and bench instruction where relevant.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Competency and Experience [Knowledge, Skills and Abilities]

Required Qualifications/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology OR;

  • Associate degree from an accredited institution in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology OR;

  • Equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting the requirements defined by CLIA 88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.

  • Specialty Training completed within three (3) months of hire/transfer into role.

  • Three (3) years as Medical Technologist experience, including one year in the host laboratory, preferred.

  • Knowledge of Medical terminology and laboratory information system.

  • Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of nursing practice.

  • Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • None preferred.

License, Certification & Clearances

  • ASCP Certification.

  • Act 34-PA Criminal Record Check from the PA State Police system.

  • Valid Driver’s License.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.).

  • Travel may be expected locally between System locations.
