Job Summary

A position is available in Aquarion Water Company of Connecticut’s Southern Division for a Utility Worker (Union). Applicant will be responsible for ensuring the efficient distribution of clean water by monitoring, maintaining, and repairing water distribution systems, responding to customer inquiries, and adhering to company safety protocols. This position will be reporting out of the Stamford office.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repair to company owned fire hydrants, service lines, valves and blow offs.

  • Perform routine maintenance including flushing, valve operation, pressure testing and fill/chlorinate newly installed water mains.

  • Operate equipment such as jackhammer, gate machine, pumps, flushing tubes, leak correlating equipment, tapping machines, data collection tools pipe locator and utility truck.

  • Respond to and resolve customer complaints regarding leakage and emergency repair.

  • Perform fire flow tests using Pitometer equipment and calculate flows.

  • Perform meter reader duties as assigned in a back-up capacity. This includes all aspects of general meter reading including reading all types of meters, recording readings and account information on documents and hand-held computers, resolving out-of-bounds readings, updating service locations and account sequences, investigating lost accounts, and responding to customer inquiries.

  • Required to maintain records, logs, maps, and tap cards, etc., on paper and on computer.

  • Maintain all tools, comply with company safety rules, and perform other or lesser skilled duties as assigned.

  • Perform shutdowns, turn-ons, inspection, and supervision of contractors involved in emergency repair or Capital programs.

  • Work on a mobile Toughbook to access GIS, SAP and CRM.

  • Must be available to work overtime.

    Note: T his position is required to participate on the Southern Division Distribution Standby roster once fully trained.

Education

  • Incumbent must possess mechanical aptitude, organizational ability, and effective communications skills, both oral and written.

  • Educational requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent and the incumbent must hold and maintain a valid State of CT license to operate a motor vehicle. A good driving record (DMV check required).

  • Knowledge of plumbing and water utility experience are desirable.

  • Incumbent must be able to use hand tools (such as wrenches and gate/curb keys), drive, stand for prolonged periods of time, walk long distances, lift 100 pounds and work in confined spaces.

  • License & Certifications: Successful candidate shall obtain a CT DI Distribution Operator Certification within 24 months; then shall obtain a CT DII Distribution Operator certification within 36 months; then shall obtain a CT DIII Distribution Operator certification within 60 months. Upon receiving a DIII certification, candidate will be eligible for a pay upgrade and entry into a standby rotation.

Salary

  • This position is classified as a Union Hourly Grade 8 position with a rate range that has a training wage of $38.69/hour.

  • Successful candidate will move through Step 1 through 8 of the range at 6-month intervals with satisfactory performance to the maximum salary.

  • Upon attainment of a Class III Distribution certification, employee will progress to Grade 9 wage range. To carry the title of Senior Utility Worker, candidate must possess required licenses.
