Hagerstown Community College Orientation Specialist- Adult Literacy Services in Hagerstown, Maryland

SUMMARY STATEMENT This position assists the Intake Assessment and Transition Specialist by conducting testing, intake and registration for new and returning students in the Adult Literacy Services program.

 

Please note, this is a temporary, grant-funded, part-time position.  Hours per week will vary based on program needs.

 

We are building a semi-seasonal team who can conduct intake orientations and testing onsite at local Washington County Public Schools. Strong preference given to those who can speak Spanish in order to work with large numbers of our incoming student population.

 

Though shifts may be available throughout the year, and training will happen outside of these times, applicants should have high availability during the following dates when intake events are likely to be scheduled:  

 

Monday-Thursday evenings 4:30-8:30 pm

September 9-12, 16-19, and 23-26

January 22-23, 27-30

May 19-22

 

Saturday 8:30 am-12:00 pm

September 21 and 28

January 25, February 1

May 10 and 17

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

A. The Orientation Specialist reports directly to and is responsible to the Director of Developmental Education and Adult Literacy Services.

 

B. The position provides no supervision.

 

C. The Orientation Specialist coordinates most closely with the Intake Assessment and Transition Specialist, Management Information Specialist, Instructional Specialist; Office Associates of Adult Education and Developmental Education and Adult Literacy Services, Academic Testing Center staff, Continuing Education staff, Adult Education instructional staff, and student workers.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

A. Local Program Duties:

  1. Work as a team member with the Program Director, IATS, ELLTS, IS, MIS, and AOA II

     

  2. Assist in conducting orientation, intake, and assessment sessions for Adult Literacy Services students.

     

  3. Manage creation of assessment sessions using online testing tools.

     

  4. Administer and proctor assessments including pretests and posttests. 

     

  5. Assist in coordinating the procedures for assessment and placement of learners in appropriate level classes at appropriate educational function levels.

     

  6. Communicate with learners and instructors regarding placement and progress.

     

  7. Work directly with IATS to ensure program standards are met regarding orientation, intake and assessments. 

     

  8. Work as a liaison between the Academic Testing Center and Adult Literacy Services when scheduling assessment dates and times; manage technical issues surrounding testing. 

     

B. Perform other duties as assigned based upon program demographics, enrollment trends, and the needs of special student populations

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree required; bilingual ability (specifically Spanish) strongly preferred; Adult Education teaching or testing experience strongly preferred; and counseling experience preferred. Previous experience administering standardized tests and experience delivering professional development/training preferred.  

 

SKILLS AND ABILITITES

Excellent interpersonal and verbal skills; strong analytical skills and knowledge of assessment and connection with student learning outcomes based on research in adult learning and development; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with instructional staff, students, and others of diverse backgrounds; proficiency in computer applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; ability to work independently and accurately under pressure, and to make decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures; knowledge of all Literacy, Adult and Community Education System (LACES) software and local program's intake and update form is helpful.
