UPMC Coding Staff Coordinator in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Purpose:

The Coding Staff Coordinator assists in the maintenance of the Health Information Coding Department. This role assures there is an organized atmosphere and that activities in the department are controlled and kept within the established guidelines.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists the coders in obtaining missing documents from various departments in order to complete records in a timely fashion.

  • Coordinates the retrospective coding audit process in conjunction with the Manager of Coding Compliance, Auditing and Education

  • Assists with daily problem solving and ensures that work is completed within the system defined timeframes.

  • Serves as one of the liaisons between the Health Information Department, Registration and the Business Office.

  • Compiles daily coding backlog information for statistics.

  • Assists in the revision of departmental procedures. Actively participates in problem solving in order to assure a smooth operational atmosphere.

  • Respects the privacy and confidentiality of patient information

  • Enters productivity statistics into the computer on a monthly basis.

  • Communicates accurately, clearly and effectively with Health Information Department Staff, Transcription Staff, the Health Information and Transcription Management Staff, Business Office Staff, Patient Access Staff and other hospital employees as directed.

  • Must be effective in communicating changes and effective in problem solving.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.

  • 2-year degree in Health Information Administration, Medical Secretarial, or be a graduate of a similar program, or, may have 2-3 years of experience in the Health Information Department as a coder or 2-3 years of experience in billing/reimbursement.

  • Must demonstrate proven experience in problem solving and have shown skills in dealing with people and work-related issues.

  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively.

  • Must be self-motivated, dependable, display maturity and tact.

  • Must have good rapport with Medical Staff.

  • Must be able to demonstrate confidence in performing all functions related to the coding department including ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT coding, DRG's, and APC's.

  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 34
