DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This position will introduce the intern to the collections held at the Pennsylvania State Archives, including both state agency records and non-government records of historically significant value. The intern will learn basic archival preservation techniques and how to identify records needing further conservation. The intern will update and create new holdings lists and content on our current collection management system (Eloquent/ARCH) so the public can access records.
There will be a chance to learn basic archival theory through readings provided by the intern supervisor. Additionally, the intern will assist with the American Indian Language Project to create an inventory of early manuscripts. During this project, the intern will gain experience researching and identifying American Indian tribes and adding access points to the finding aid to facilitate discoverability.
To gain an understanding of how the public uses our collections for research purposes, the intern will work with the Public Services Section. They will receive training in how to search our collections to answer common genealogical or other reference questions. They will also receive opportunities to work with members of other sections at the Pennsylvania State Archives to gain an understanding of how these sections serve both the public and other state agencies. QUALIFICATIONS Internship Requirements: All applicants must be enrolled at a college or university in an undergraduate or graduate program at the time of their internship.
Additional Requirements: You must be able and willing to report to Harrisburg, PA during the Summer Keystone Internship dates, which will be a 10-week period between May 12 and August 22, 2025. You must be able to perform essential job functions.
Preferred Qualifications (not required): Majoring, minoring, or have a concentration in Archival Studies, History, Public History, or Library and Information Sciences Work, academic, or volunteer experience that has prepared you for this internship An understanding of how this internship will help you meet your academic and/or career goals
