Job Summary
Develops and administers training programs and provides continual training to employees engaged in cleaning buildings and facilities in the custodial department. Directs staff, mainly through foreman, on workflow and department needs. In this work, emphasis is placed on responsibility and accountability through training and directed cleaning. This work will also include close supervision and inspection of the work of a group of subordinates engaged in custodial cleaning. This position is considered essential personnel and will require storm duty and emergency call-outs.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Develops and administers a comprehensive custodial training program. This includes hands on training for a suitable duration of time, proper chemical understanding, large and small department trainings, and safety. This program will be continually developed with the involvement of the Superintendent and may evolve over time.
This position will have some responsibility for timesheets and time clock entries.
Inspects buildings and equipment for cleanliness, checks results of work, and meets with various academic/administrative personnel to review custodial work concerns. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in a timely, fair, and objective manner.
Reports needs for equipment purchases, repairs and replacements in buildings. Ensures that custodial materials and supplies are available.
Issues keys to subordinate personnel and performs related work as required.
Reports progress of daily routines of workers to the Superintendent of Custodial Services. Schedules work and develops work plans for athletics and special events.
Minimum Qualifications
Associates Degree or 8-10 years custodial supervisory experience. Additional related experience may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required degree.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of custodial procedures and application; the ability to train others
Knowledge of University policies and procedures, professional standards and regulations, safety requirements and a knowledge of basic first aid.
Knowledge of cleaning techniques and procedures, and the use of custodial materials, tools, equipment, and chemicals.
Skill in managing ones’ own time and the time of others while monitoring/assessing the performance of self, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
Skill in the operation of office equipment including, but not limited to, multiline telephone, typewriter, calculator, multi-function printer/copy/scan/fax machine and computer as well as computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.
Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure and the ability to react and respond quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.
Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with moderate supervision.
Skill in material resources management through obtaining and seeing to the appropriate use of equipment, facilities, and materials needed to do certain work.
Ability to obtain a driver’s license prior to employment.
Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
