Job Summary
The Evening Circulation Specialist supervises circulation services and student employees on duty, as well as assists with building security during evening hours of library operations. The work includes providing courteous and efficient service to patrons of Cook Library. The position performs a variety of other support functions, including building closing and monetary responsibilities. Typical work hours are Sunday through Thursday, 3 p.m. to midnight and will vary according to the academic calendar, university holidays, and similar variables.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Supervises evening operations of the circulation desk. Tasks include, but are not limited to: Provides excellent customer service and timely response to patron requests.; assists patrons according to established policies and procedures; addresses patron complaints and problems patiently and proactively; resolves routine problems; identifies and refers complex or potentially serious problems to the supervisor. Works evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
Coaches and assists student employees when the students’ supervisor is not present: Models good work habits for others and reports concerns to supervisor as needed.
Coordinates matters of building use and security during evening hours. Tasks include, but are not limited to: Monitors security in the building (through physical walkthroughs and closed-circuit television) and ensures all guidelines are followed; serves as employee in charge according to assigned schedule.
Performs financial responsibilities. Collects and counts money accepted at the circulation desk on a daily basis and balances petty cash at closing. Reports any discrepancy to the supervisor. Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Two years of coursework at an accredited college or university and one year customer service experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of customer service principles;
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
Ability to handle stressful situations.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in an academic (higher education) library; Experience working in library circulation or other library public service area.
