Summary
The Operator Trainee observes and assists the Operator B in the start-up, processing, and shut down of Calcium Ammonium Nitrate-17% Nitrogen (CAN-17) and Liquid Ammonium Phosphate (10-34-0) production process; also observes and assists the Lab Analyst as assigned. This individual is responsible for maintaining a clean and safe environment throughout the production plant areas at all times. A successful incumbent will learn about plant activities and purposes in order to advance to an Operator B position.
Key Responsibilities
Observes the operation of CAN 17 process area; assists in coordinating transfer of limestone, ammonium nitrate, nitric acid, and ammonia into designated area.
Observes the operation of Liquid Ammonia Phosphate (10-34-0) area; assists in coordinating transfer of anhydrous ammonia (NH3) and super phosphoric acid (SPA) into designated area.
Observes and assists the Lab Analyst to gain knowledge in conducting and analyzing chemical and physical laboratory tests; assists in testing in-process fertilizer samples for quality control.
Monitors system pressures and tank levels according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP); assists in gathering readings including, but not limited to specific gravity (SPG) and pH to ensure product is on grade.
Observes and assists in start-up and shut down of CAN-17 and 10-34-0 production processes. Records operating data such as process conditions, test results, and instrument readings into log book each shift.
Responsible for cleaning up any spilled product throughout the plant; uses a broom to sweep product from stairs, loading areas, and under plant equipment; moves large spills to designated area using front-end loader.
Assists operators with lock out/tag out procedures, makes list of all tools needed for maintenance jobs, and advises appropriate personnel of any special procedures such as confined space entry necessary for repairs.
Performs routine preventative maintenance (PM) on equipment utilized including, but not limited to, routine visual checks, checking fluid levels, and ensuring all safety items such as lights, horn, and seat belts are working properly.
Responsible for maintaining a clean and organized work area; cleans equipment, files and organizes SOP and shift logs.
Maintains safe working environment by complying with all rules and regulations, and continuously practices safety while performing duties. Ensures that all personnel, truck drivers, and vendors are maintaining a safe working environment at all times.
Wears the appropriate PPE including, but not limited to assigned uniform, steel-toed boots, safety glasses, hard hat, hearing protection, respirator, acid gear and gloves when entering specified plant areas at all times. Additional PPE may be required based on specific job duties.
Typical Education
- High school diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Relevant Experience
- Previous experience in a manufacturing plant environment a plus.
Other Information

Physical Requirements:
This job requires the ability to work in excess of eight hours per day to include weekends and off-duty hours to reach operational goals and compliance requirements. Job duties may require the ability to climb stairs, climb ladders, bend, stoop, reach, lift, grip, push, pull, move and/or carry tools and/or equipment which may be in excess of 50 pounds. In order to perform the duties of this job, the incumbent may be required to walk in excess of 300 yards to reach areas across the facility. Finger dexterity may be required to operate various hand tools and/or calculator, etc. This individual uses frequent repetitive motions with hands and/or feet to complete job duties; may be required to walk on uneven or slippery surfaces and stand for extended periods of time. The incumbent may perform job duties from a ladder, scaffolding, or elevated place as necessary.
Working in this plant operations environment requires the use of safety equipment to include, but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toed boots, hard hat, respirator, face shield, welding hood/gloves, acid gear, fire-retardant clothing, and company issued uniforms in designated areas. This individual may be subject to variations in noise levels and temperature changes due to weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, this individual is frequently exposed to an outdoor environment, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. Loose fitting clothing, open toe/heel shoes and the wearing of contact lenses are not permitted.
