Amazon Manager, Technical Program Management, AWS Central Operations in Herndon, Virginia

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a Manager, Technical Program Management to join our Data Center Community Central Operations organization. As part of our mission to provide industry-leading cloud computing services, we need a manager to lead a group of talented individuals who drive improvements in our data center operations through effective program management and cross-functional collaboration. What you will own: You will lead a team of technical program managers charged with improving the efficiency of landing new server racks in our data centers. You will lead collaboration with business and technical teams to deliver world-class solutions that are highly scalable, secure, and flexible while maintaining a strong customer focus. You will work with stakeholders and multiple business teams to identify, define, and specify solutions meeting data center operational requirements. You will work with multiple teams globally to deliver those solutions. You will be the face and voice for the project teams and ensure all stakeholders are aware of successes, risks and project status. You will tailor your communications to specific audiences and communicate clearly and concisely to both business and technical audiences.

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. Key job responsibilities

  • Manage, grow and develop a team of technical program managers, promoting a culture of inclusion, innovation and performance

  • Lead the new server rack installation space, to include driving current improvement initiatives and developing the long term strategic direction of the area

  • Develop, monitor and evaluate key process metrics to identify improvement initiatives

  • Lead large-scope programmatic technical operations enhancements, including implementing critical business initiatives across multiple sites

  • Collaborate with project stakeholders in multiple business and technical teams to define and deliver on agreed milestones. Anticipate bottlenecks, provide escalation management, anticipate and make tradeoffs. Plan and coordinate events including facilitation and action item management.

  • Drive effective teamwork, communication, collaboration and commitment across multiple disparate groups with competing priorities

  • Provide concise written and verbal communication to a wide variety of stakeholders ranging from project summaries to stakeholders, summary of technical discussions, or communications with Senior Executives for strategic decisions.

A day in the life

Meet with internal Data Center Central Operations teams and collaborate with external teams, including such teams as Data Center Automation, Capacity Planning, Hardware Engineering and Services software teams to drive initiatives to increase our receive to land efficiency. Own outcomes, close detective gaps across teams and build mechanistic closure of issues detected. Your day will be split between stakeholder engagement meetings, deep dives and status sessions with your direct team.

About the team

The Rack Installation team is a part of the Central Operations team that supports the AWS Data Center Community. This team is specifically looking at efficiencies, optimization and scaling of new capacity across the global AWS Data Center footprint.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, science, engineering or related discipline or equivalent experience

  • 7+ years of technical product or program management experience

  • 5+ years of people management in a high performing technical program management or engineering environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree or advanced professional degree.

  • Good understanding of data center technologies.

  • Familiarity with the AWS product suite.

  • Experience of leading teams across multiple locations.

  • Experience with and deep understanding of multiple project management methodologies.

  • Exceptional analytical, quantitative, communication, and presentation skills.
