Rate Classification/Pay Range: Grade 4A, $30.64 USD per hour

The Pressure Technician I will assist in the operation and maintenance of pressure-regulating equipment, valves, and related components at Washington Gas' Gas Supply Operations (GSO) Facilities. Under the direction of higher-grade personnel, the technician will operate, maintain, calibrate, troubleshoot, and install equipment used at GSO facilities. This role includes operating a company vehicle and inputting time and data into the workforce management system electronically.

To gain comprehensive knowledge of Pressure Operations, the first 12 months of employment will involve rotating assignments every 3 months at the following Pressure Operations locations: Dranesville, Northwest, Springfield, and Southeast Stations. This position is progressive, leading to Pressure Technician II.

What You'll Do:

  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of GSO facilities, including regulator station maintenance, troubleshooting, confined space work, transmission valve maintenance, and transmission service maintenance.

  • Perform miscellaneous tasks such as yard and building maintenance, digging, snow removal, painting, grass cutting, and trimming.

  • Conduct periodic inspections of stations.

  • Install tubing, conduit, wiring, piping, and framework for all GSO facilities.

  • Interpret company records, including map books and station drawings.

  • Communicate effectively via company radio and verbal instructions.

  • Stock and equip company vehicles; maintain tools and equipment.

  • Represent the company professionally while interacting with external parties Emergency Personnel (Fire Department, Police Department), Washington Gas customers, Contractors, Inspectors (federal, state, and local), vendors, suppliers, and other utility personnel.

What You Bring:

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required with working knowledge of mathematics, physics, and electronics.

  • Minimum of 18 months of related hands-on technical experience (e.g., pipefitting, mechanical trade, maintenance/installation of manufacturing equipment, pumps, compressors, automotive mechanics, small engine repair, HVAC, plumbing, regulator maintenance)

  • Formal technical training is preferred

  • Intermediate computer skills (e.g., file management, data entry, creating/modifying spreadsheets and word documents, email management)

  • Gas knowledge and mechanical aptitude.

  • Ability to smell odorized natural gas.

  • Basic map drawing and reading skills.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.

  • Must pass the ACT WorkKeys exam before an interview.

  • Must pass Pressure Operations Pressure Tech I Entry Test.

  • Must complete all mandated safety and annual training.

  • Must pass the Pressure Technician II exam within 18 months of hire.

  • Must obtain all Washington Gas Operator Qualifications upon hire.

  • CDL holders are subject to testing under federal highway regulations.

General Information:

  • Shift work is required for this position.

  • This position reports to various company facilities as needed

  • Overnight travel may be required at times.

  • Use of a personal vehicle may be required at times.
