Job Summary

This is a first level supervisory position in the T&D Telecom Group. Responsible for providing daily supervision and work coordination to communication technicians working as one person crew on the maintenance, troubleshooting, commissioning and installation of Distribution Automation communication equipment and the 900MHz Two Way Radio System. Oversee the activities of Communication Technicians focusing on personnel safety, system reliability and completion of capital and maintenance programs. Technical support to communication technicians to resolve RF communications issues, review of engineering specifications and implementation of FCC/Safety standards.

The Telecom group works in multiple T&D projects with Distribution Automation and Two Way Radio systems therefore the supervisor is responsible for Planning, scheduling, and coordinating between all different projects to manage the communication technicians work plan.

Job Responsibilities

  • Daily supervision and work coordination of communication technicians working on the maintenance, troubleshooting, commissioning and installation of Distribution Automation communication equipment and the 900MHz Two Way Radio System. Oversee the activities of Communication Technicians focusing on personnel safety, system reliability and completion of capital and maintenance programs.

  • Prepares and executes maintenance schedules and testing procedures to insure proper operations of communications devices, instrumentation and two way radio equipment. Develop schedule for facility inspections, vegetation control and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) compliance routine for repeaters sites.

  • Technical support to communication technicians to resolve RF communications issues, review of engineering specifications and implementation of FCC/Safety standards.

  • Provide engineering and on site field support for DA/Two Way Radio installations and complex communications systems troubleshooting. Develop antenna and cable marking guidelines and makeup as built drawings to reflect latest antenna and cable layouts for major communication repeater sites.

  • Conducts field visits and site acceptance for new communication repeater sites.

  • Develop and maintain databases to track technical information, maintenance programs, and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) routine schedule. Work collaboratively with Distribution Engineering to ensure adherence to applicable testing procedures and compliance with all safety regulations and protocols. Coordinate and commission the installation of new communication devices. Manage Projects to ensure they stay within budget and schedule. Collaborate with various organizations to ensure the successful completion of projects.

  • Assist Telecom Engineers in the design of communication equipment installation and upgrades to account for field conditions; evaluation of new communication equipment and provide engineering solutions for design issues.

  • Manage and research vendor to calibrate RF test equipment.

  • Create requisitions and invoices for equipment and services needed such as antenna, cables, radios, propane services, generator inspection, HVAC, vegetation management and facilities related items. Maintain lease agreements and set up rental payment with Account Payable for leased communication tower sites.

Job Specific Qualifications

Required

  • B.S Degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Discipline with a minimum of 3 years related experience in Radio operations, Supervisory controls communications, Two Way Radio systems and/or Telecommunications industry. In lieu of a degree must have a minimum of 5 years related experience in Radio operations, Supervisory controls communications, Two Way Radio systems and/or Telecommunications industry.

  • Knowledge of Radio technical operations and RF Testing equipment.

  • Ability to read and comprehend technical and operational manuals and instructions, safety rules, policies and procedures, and instruction manuals

  • Proven supervisory skills with ability to manage technical workforce.

  • Demonstrated Experience in Safety Operations, and developing safety work methods.

  • Project management skills with excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

  • Basic computer networking and infrastructure.

  • Demonstrated ability to interact with equipment manufacturers and vendors.

  • This position requires driving to company locations and off-site assignments and events, applicants must possess a valid US driver’s license with a safe and satisfactory driver history.

Desired

  • Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and other applicable federal, state and local regulations.

  • Thorough knowledge of RF communications and current testing practices.

  • Experience working in a Union environment is a plus.

  • Knowledge of the Collective Bargaining agreement.

  • Familiarity with PSEG Long Island transmission and distribution system.

  • Knowledge of ANSI Standards, Motorola R56 Standards and National Electric Code.

  • Reading and interpreting blueprints and schematics drawings.

  • Writing technical reports and Safety Procedures.
