Position: System FPGA Engineer

As an experienced System FPGA Engineer (individual contributor), you will work closely with the platform team and collaborate with cross-functional teams, including SoC, software, firmware, packaging, SIPI, product management, and component suppliers. You will lead the development of advanced control-plane and telemetry systems for servers, managing FPGA architecture, HW/SW interface, IP selection, documentation, RTL development, simulation, system emulation, DV, testing, and bring-up.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define the reference platform by collaborating with SoC and systems architects, hardware engineering, and software/firmware teams to ensure FPGA solutions align with system requirements and specifications.

  • Architect control systems for system control, power sequencing, fault recovery, and telemetry on reference platforms.

  • Develop extensible communication interfaces and APIs, utilizing published standards where applicable.

  • Implement RTL-level algorithms on the FPGA platform, creating and executing verification and validation plans for RTL designs, documenting the design and validation processes.

  • Test and debug FPGA-emulated designs using lab equipment and JTAG, working with team members for system bring-up and validation.

  • Prepare and present technical documentation and reports to stakeholders, including engineering teams, senior management, customers, and suppliers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

  • 5+ years of experience in FPGA architecture, implementation, and verification.

  • Strong understanding of CPU/SoC and computer architecture, logic design, and standard industry interfaces.

  • Experience in FPGA design optimization.

  • Proven experience with I2C, UART, SerDes, AXI4, PCIe 5/6, high-speed ADCs/DACs, DDR5, and LPDDR5X.

  • Proficiency in HDL development, Verilog, C/C++ coding, real-time software constraints, scripting, integration, synthesis, debugging, simulation, test bench creation, and debugging using CAD tools (e.g., Synopsys, Mentor, Cadence, or FPGA-specific tools).

  • Hands-on experience with FPGA development tools, hardware bring-up, server system integration, and FPGA-based software integration.

  • Proficiency in FPGA tool flows, including synthesis, place-and-route, and partitioning.

  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively within a cross-functional team environment.

  • Strong technical documentation skills and excellent written and verbal communication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

  • 10+ years of experience in FPGA architecture, implementation, and verification.

  • Advanced knowledge of CPU/SoC and computer architecture, logic design, and standard industry interfaces.

  • Extensive experience in FPGA design optimization.

  • Expertise with SerDes, AXI4, PCIe 5/6, high-speed ADCs/DACs, DDR5, and LPDDR5X.

  • Mastery of HDL development, Verilog, C/C++ coding, Python scripting, integration, synthesis, debugging, simulation, and test bench creation using CAD tools (e.g., Synopsys, Mentor, Cadence, or FPGA-specific tools).

  • Mastery of FPGA tool flows, including synthesis, place-and-route, and partitioning.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field and 6+ years of Systems Engineering or related work experience.

OR

Master's degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field and 5+ years of Systems Engineering or related work experience.

OR

PhD in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field and 4+ years of Systems Engineering or related work experience.

Pay range and Other Compensation & Benefits :

$162,600.00 - $270,700.00

The above pay scale reflects the broad, minimum to maximum, pay scale for this job code for the location for which it has been posted. Even more importantly, please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Qualcomm. We also offer a competitive annual discretionary bonus program and opportunity for annual RSU grants (employees on sales-incentive plans are not eligible for our annual bonus).
