Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Center for Maunakea Stewardship (CMS) administered by Maunakea Shared Servcies (MKSS), located on Maunakea, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $4,100 - $4,600/Mon.
DUTIES:
While conducting regular tours (rounds) of University of Hawaii (UH)
managed
lands on
Maunakea and areas covered by cooperative agreements between UH
a
nd
adjacent landowners, rangers initiate communication to educate visitors,
observatory staff and others about the cultural, natural and scientific significance
of the mauna. Rangers also educate visitors about visitor responsibilities under the
Maunakea Comprehensive Management Plan, its subplans and the Hawai?i
Administrative Rules Chapter 20-26;

ncluding respecting culturally significant sites
and cultural practitioners. Informs visitors of the
h
azards encountered on
Maunakea and how to safely deal with them. Acts as Emergency Medical
Responder (EMR) and follows established procedures during emergency
situations. Inspects road conditions during inclement weather and initiates road
closures per established procedures. Assists with traffic management and parking
during road closures and periods of high visitation such as the first snowfall of the
winter. Sends out road conditions emails to all organizations working on Maunakea
to keep them informed of any dangerous conditions. Directly observes activities
within the UH managed lands on Maunakea and documents non-compliance per
established procedures. Conducts external inspections of facilities located within
the UH Managed lands and submits written reports to supervisor. Informs and
assists Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in the event of a medical emergency.
Informs authorities and assists with cleaning up reported incidents that may involve hazardous chemicals.
Informs law enforcement and supervisors of any observed illegal behavior and
documents occurrences

er established procedures. Maintains and submits a
daily log to supervisors. Attends training classes and staff meetings as necessary
to ensure proficiency in work duties. Work schedule regularly consists of 14-hour
days which include late evenings, early mornings, weekends and holidays.
Rangers are permitted, but not required to overnight at Halepohaku during shifts.
Expected to work overtime during staff shortages, inclement weather,
emergencies and special events. Rangers provide own transportation to Hilo or
Halepohaku as designated. Work station is Halepohaku.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
Bachelors Degree from an accredited four (4) year
college or university. (College coursework or formal training in a related field
and at least three (3) years of related experience may
substitute for a
Bachelors Degree.).
