Job Description Summary

Using hand tools and test equipment, the individual will perform maintenance on both electronic and mechanical equipment, such as industrial controls, computers, and servomechanisms, following blueprints and manufacturer’s specifications. Will train and operate all sterilization equipment. Ensures compliance with BD quality systems, policies, procedures and best practices, and all local, state, federal and BD safety regulations, policies and procedures.

Resume Required

Essential responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Support engineering projects-ordering and installation of new equipment, new equipment IQ's. Continuous Improvement projects to reduce expenses, improve reliability, and reduce waste.

  • Test electronic circuits to locate defects and understand the use of amp meters, voltmeters, and schematics.

  • Install, modify and understand control panel wiring. Work closely with the engineering group to understand and modify PLC programs and maintain PLC ladder logic programs.

  • Propose design changes and review with engineer to upgrade equipment, eliminate re-occurring problems, improve product quality, reduce costs, etc.

  • Most project work is done during the time the plant is shutdown. It is expected that the individual in this position is fully engaged in project work for the Sterilization department.

  • Set up all automatic, semi-automatic and hand operated machines so that all products produced will meet allquality specifications.

  • Make all repairs to machines and notify proper personnel of necessary major repair.

  • Create work orders and notifications and close PM work orders on time after completing PM task.

  • Perform preventive maintenance as dictated by the maintenance planner.

  • Ensure all PM work order tasks are closed on time.

  • Instruct operators concerning proper methods for the purpose of attaining maximum quality and quantity production in a professional manner.

  • Work with engineering in making recommendations for modifying equipment.

  • Schedule work and requisition material as required.

  • Assist in training new personnel in all jobs in the department as required.

  • Assist Management in planning and controlling the quality and quantity of production.

  • Actively participates as a team member with operators, utilities and all other personnel working in assigned area.

  • The EMT must have knowledge of and be able to perform efficiently all Sterilization department operations. 

  • Responsible for quality of product after machine repairs. 

  • Ensures product quality meets specifications and proper documentation is completed.

  • Responsible for informing Management of machine problems or other causes of production stoppages per Sterilization Escalation plan.

  • Learn all quality inspections.

  • Observe all plant safety standards.

  • Must know lock out procedures and Safety Key Interrupt procedures.

  • Must be able to train Operators to lock out and Safety Key Interrupt procedures.

  • Routinely checks with operators on equipment in a proactive manner for any quality or operational issues.

  • Assist with radiation emergencies when and if they occur.

  • General housekeeping and clean-up of work area / safety awareness.

  • Sustain a productive work environment through effective communication with team members.

  • Obey all company policies, standards and rules, including but not limited to: Safety policies and rules (including lockout procedures); Quality policies and rules.

  • Must maintain regular, punctual attendance.

  • Responsible for quality of product after machine repairs. 

  • Ensures product quality meets specifications and proper documentation is completed.

  • Other duties as required to support the needs of the business.

Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, required.

  • Completion of two years technical school training in electronics, electrical mechanical, and/or equivalent experience in the military/industry, preferred.

  • If you need additional training in either electronics or mechanics, BD has the opportunity to enroll candidates in coursework through a local community college, tuition paid.

Experience:

  • 5 years’ experience in maintenance and repair of hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic systems in lieu of a 2-year related technical degree.  No experience required with a related 2-year technical degree.

  • Manufacturing experience, preferred.

  • Previous PLC experience, preferred.

  • Radiation Certification – Must be able to acquire in 12 months.

  • This job is contingent on clearing an FBI background check.  You will be required to provide fingerprints to be sent to the FBI.  The corporate security officer will determine if the background information will be acceptable for this position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Forklift – Must be able to obtain within 3 months.

  • Strong competence in mechanical work with a solid foundation in both mechanical and electrical principles.

  • Proven knowledge of basic mechanical drive systems and components including but not limited to: cam motions; intermittent motion indexers; gear drive transmissions; prime movers - electrical motors, etc; robots; bearings and bushings - repair & replacement; timing & synchronization of mechanical drive trains.

  • Fundamental electrical and electronic knowledge to resolve challenges.

  • Ability to understand an electrical schematic.

  • Ability to understand valve diagrams.

  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems with the ability to repair preferred.

  • Proven problem solving and decision-making skills.

  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.

  • Well-developed planning and organizational skills.

  • Preferred understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems including: fluidic and pneumatic components (valves, cylinders, control devices, regulators, flow controls, etc.)

  • Preferred understanding ofPLC programs and PLC ladder logic programs.

  • Must be able to speak, read and write English

  • Good interpersonal skills

  • Computer skills (SAP, Excel, Word preferred) - Basic

Physical Demands:

  • PCP Level 3: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly.

Work Environment (if applicable):

  • High speed manufacturing environment.  Must remain alert and focused.

  • No air-conditioning in parts of sterilization/warehouse area.

  • May have intermittent exposure to chemicals;

  • Degree of exposure to dust, dirt, heat, fumes, noise, vibration and chemicals.

  • When working outside, any & all physical elements of weather & temperature may be present. Inside, noise is the major distraction.

  • Safety shoes must be worn in the warehouse and sterilization.

  • Safety glasses must be worn when in the warehouseandsterilization.

  • Some physical exertion, including lifting, may be required.

  • 12 hour nights
