Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), Department of Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology (ABP), Epigenomics Research Program, located at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $6,000 - $7,500/Mon.

DUTIES: Develops and coordinates data management, and laboratory procedures. Performs day-to-day oversight and coordination of a research group and leads the execution of a research project. Coordinates employments in areas assigned, which include assisting with scheduling, staffing, and training; and collecting and logging performance evaluations. Organizes and coordinates community outreach events for the laboratory. Assists in overseeing the budgets for purchasing/materials and inventory management. Executes all laboratory purchases, including interfacing with commercial vendors, requisitioning product quotes, comparing product samples, researching product needs for lab members, coordinating vendor demonstrations, maintaining and anticipating lab inventory needs, and managing the repair and servicing of lab equipment. Develops and conducts experiments in molecular biology, protein chemistry, immunology, cell biology, and pharmacology. Uses techniques to conduct the experiments that include, but are not limited to, practical knowledge of tissue culture; deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA) preparation; DNA subcloning; real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR); gel electrophoresis; Flow cytometry; Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA); Luminex assays; Western blot analysis; and next generation sequencing (NGS), including single-cell NGS. Performs molecular biology assays using state-of-the-art technology to characterize genotypes and expression profiles associated with type 2 diabetes, autism, cancer and other diseases. Isolates DNA and RNA from various types of biological samples. Analyzes genotypes and expression using TaqMan, microarrays and RNA sequences. Uses medical library resources, such as PubMed and Ovid. Organizes data in a written format. Coordinates team and staff meetings. Presents work and research ideas at weekly laboratory meetings and journal club with other co-workers and university faculty. Organizes and maintains laboratory records, including chemical and biological inventory, lab supplies, and equipment information/maintenance. Keeps accurate and detailed records of experiments performed. Ensures other members are compliant with regulatory guidelines and lab safety practices. Coordinates operations in Epigenomics Core Facility of Hawaii recharge account, facilitates related work orders and invoices, and works with lab technician and team to facilitate services with attention to record keeping, updates, and website management of information. Coordinates activities on the Integrative Center for Precision Nutrition and Human Health and support other researchers on the center. Prepares manuscripts for publication in scholarly journals and for presentation at national scientific meetings. Helps the Principal Investigator with writing new grants.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university in Biology or related field.

EXPERIENCE

Three to five (3-5) years of work experience conducting re earch in molecular biology, protein chemistry, immunology, cell biology, or pharmacology, including experience with the following techniques: DNA and RNA preparation; DNA subcloning; real time PCR; gel electrophoresis; ELISA; Luminex, and Western blot analysis. Experience should include at least two (2) years working with NGS, specifically Thermofisher Ion Torrent platform.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of cell and molecular biology, and protein chemistry theory and methods. Knowledge of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs. Knowledge of spectroscopy. Knowledge in using medical library resources, such as PubMed and Ovid. Practical knowledge of tissue culture. Knowledge of data analysis and basics of bioinformatics. Working knowledge of Apple and Personal Computer (PC) software (e.g. word processing, presentation, graphing programs). Knowledge in using medical library resources, such as PubMed and Ovid. Knowledge of DNA methylation and RNAseq analysis on R Studio.

ABILITIES and SKILLS

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to build relationships and work effectively in a team setting. Ability to collect blood specimen from patient by either venipuncture or skin puncture techniques.
