TITLE: Transfer Station Supervisor

DEPARTMENT: Solid Waste

CLASSIFICATION: Superintendent 2

PAY GRADE: 14

FLSA: Nonexempt

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

General Statement of Duties

Performs responsible supervisory work administering the operation of the Solid Waste

Departments transfer and compaction station.

Supervision Received

Works under general supervision of an administrative superior.

Supervision Exercised

Exercises close to general supervision over all transfer station personnel,

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Directs activities and prescribes work schedules for all transfer station personnel; provides direct

oversight of all transfer station equipment and facilities; recommends changes in route arrival

times and necessary operational changes; monitors the municipal solid waste stream to ensure

that waste is acceptable; monitors pressure of compactors to ensure adequate loads and, at the

same time, to prevent abuse of compactors and trailers; takes necessary safety measures to

prevent injuries; recommends maintenance schedules for compactors; conducts employee

performance appraisals; recommends and conducts disciplinary action when necessary; prepares

and maintains accurate and complete reports and records; performs related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of compactors, hydraulics and electric motors; considerable knowledge

of refuse collection equipment and safety aspects of the solid waste industry; skill in the operation

of tractor/trailer rigs, commercial trucks, roll on/off vehicles and residential and parks collection

vehicles; ability to recognize potential problems with equipment and recommend appropriate

repairs before breakdowns occur; ability to comprehend and comply with established policies and

regulations; ability to supervise and coordinate the work of assigned personnel; ability to

understand and follow verbal and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective

working relationships.

Education

High school graduation or equivalent.

Experience

At least three years with compactors, tractor/trailer rigs and collection equipment, including some

responsible supervisory experience and the preparation of written reports and records.

Substitution

Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

Must possess a valid Commercial Drivers License (Class A) and a clean driving record; must

possess an ADEQ Solid Waste Management Facility Operator License Class 1C within three

years of employment).

specific vision requirements include close, color, distance, peripheral, depth perception and the ability to

adjust focus; occasionally required to lift up to 70 pounds.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; exposed to outdoor weather conditions,
