Grand County Environmental Health Specialist I in Hot Sulphur Springs, Colorado

JOB SUMMARY This position is responsible for performing environmental health inspections and investigations of public and private establishments and other environmental situations to ensure compliance with local and state health and safety codes; serving as environmental and public health educator who provides information and performs specialized environmental health work.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Enforces and gains compliance of public health laws and regulations by performing inspections, surveys and investigations; provides environmental evaluations; data entry of inspections results; monitors environmental interfaces of human to animal diseases; reports finding and conditions to Supervisor; consults with State as needed. Performs retail food, childcare, and school inspections. Support in air and drinking water quality programs. Supports retail food licensing and facility plan review. Educates owners, operators, students and the general public on environmental health issues and regulations; conducts presentations to schools, civic and other groups; represents the health department on various committees and groups. Prepares written and oral reports; creates hard copy records and enters electronic data, including daily activities into database. Conducts and coordinates plan reviews and pre-operational inspections for regulated facilities. Investigates routine and non-routine complaints; provides follow-up action. Obtains compliance through administrative enforcement procedures; works with Supervisor, Board of Health, and State to expedite enforcement action Participates in special team assignments, such as foodborne illness investigations and emergency response. Provides support for all projects, grant opportunities and other matters pertaining to the program. Engages in specialized programs, projects, and research in the environmental health science. Participates in committees and boards related to program activities and responsibilities. Participates in departmental emergency planning and response activities. Promotes public health within the community.
