Job Description Summary

The Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts is the largest performing arts venue in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, primarily serving the public in the Keweenaw region of Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga, and Ontonagon counties. The center is part of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) and includes oversight of programming in two theaters, a visual arts gallery, and a large public lobby.

The director reports to the VPA department chair and will work closely with faculty and staff of the VPA department to provide artistic leadership and business management for the overall function of the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. The director will implement the strategic plan of the center, participate in university and community partnerships and outreach, and lead fund-raising efforts and grant-writing related to the Presenting Series and other activities of the Rozsa Center. The director will supervise staff in all operational roles in the center including production, marketing, guest services, rentals, ticketing, concessions, and general administration.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

• Provide visionary leadership for the Arts at Michigan Tech and in the greater Keweenaw community. Work together with staff of the Rozsa Center and VPA faculty to implement and assess the strategic plan of the Rozsa Center.

• Overall management of all activities in the Rozsa Center as a vital partner in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, including season programming, budgets, booking, venue rentals, ticketing concessions, academic collaboration, outreach, and ongoing program assessment.

• Plan, book, and coordinate diverse season programming for the two Visual and Performing Arts performance spaces to achieve a meaningful, fiscally balanced, and diverse Arts program in service to students, the department and the university, and the larger community.

• Serve as direct supervisor of production manager, marketing manager, guest services manager, and UAW administrative staff. Support managers in the supervision of other staff and students.

• Practice excellent fiscal management and financial accountability. Develop and review budget plans, projections, and presenter contracts.

• Facilitate the applied educational programs of the Visual and Performing Arts Department through routine and regular collaboration with the VPA department chair, faculty, and staff.

• Work to achieve consensus on scheduling, programming, and facility use issues to support the University’s educational and outreach missions.

• Work closely with the department chair to cultivate and maintain existing relationships through community outreach and with foundations, corporations, and individuals, including VPA/Rozsa donors, endowment families, granting organizations, subscribers, Friends of the Rozsa, and volunteers. Identify and develop new funding sources. Seek out and write grant applications.

• Serve as liaison with Student Affairs, providing input on contractual, budgeting, scheduling, hospitality, and technical issues related to collaborative programming. Collaborate with the MUB board on shared events.

• Maintain a flexible work schedule to provide day/night-of-show management and to ensure high visibility and availability to clients and employees.

• Collaborate with the Director of the Rozsa Art Galleries and visual arts faculty on the implementation of a shared vision for the Rozsa Art Galleries.

• Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

• Bachelor’s Degree in an Arts related or adjacent field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Two years of relevant arts management experience.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• MFA, MBA, MPA, or MA in Arts Administration, Arts Management or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

• Programming experience for an events series including experience dealing with booking agents and contracts for artists and presenters.

• Experience in Higher education or organizations with and education related mission.

• Ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty and staff.

• Possess a valid driver’s license and meet Michigan Technological University’s vehicle use requirements.

• Willingness and ability to learn CPR certification and attend training on use of AED device.

Pay Rate/Salary

Salary based on skills and experience, $75,000 to $85,000
