Job Description Summary

The Manager of College Access Programs within the Center for Educational Outreach (CEO) is a student-centered and highly organized professional responsible for the development and implementation of high-impact educational outreach programming of the federally-funded college access grants awarded to the department. With a focus on increasing equity and inclusion in college access, the Manager oversees precollege grant-funded programs and works closely with internal and external partners to deploy effective programs that further the mission and outreach goals of the University.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

• Manages the development and implementation of innovative programming for youth that contributes to college access, student success, career awareness, and college readiness as outlined in the MI GEAR UP/College Day Administrative Handbook.

• Provide counsel and academic guidance to program participants, including making regular field visits and advising meetings, advocating for additional resources as necessary, and supervising during program activities and field trips.

• Coordinate program planning and pre- and post-program development and execution, including system interfacing, logistical planning, day-to-day operation, and program evaluation.

• Develop budget proposals and manage expenditures, reallocations, budgetary reports, and invoicing.

• Prepare and compile reports on program impact, reach, budgets, and other criteria as needed.

• Contribute to the creative vision and strategic planning of outreach programming, special events, and activities; provide assistance and support in the development of new initiatives of the Center for Educational Outreach.

• Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external constituents, including students, teachers, parents, faculty, etc., as well as partner entities such as schools, corporations, student organizations, and other agencies. Engage and build collaborative cross-campus partnerships, including serving on relevant committees and task forces as appropriate.

• Assist CEO team with the execution of the high-quality, residential, academic Summer Youth Programs programming including programmatic design and implementation, liaising with partner schools and organizations, and providing student support.

• Assist with program marketing, including the creation of promotional materials, website management, social media engagement, blog content, and presentations to a variety of audiences as needed.

• Oversee recruitment, interviewing, training, assigning and prioritizing duties, and supervision of temporary program staff and student coordinators as needed.

• Work frequent non-traditional hours, including occasional weekends and holidays, and willingness to travel occasionally.

• Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work.

• Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

• Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

• Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

• Bachelor’s degree

• 3-5 years of relevant work experience

• Demonstrated experience working with underrepresented populations

• Valid US driver’s license

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Experience working directly with K-12 youth in an educational setting.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Familiarity with the GEAR UP program and/or other programs currently administered in the department.

• Master's degree in education, social services, STEM, or related field

• Experience working with K-12 youth in a residential academic program environment.

• Experience conducting non-traditional educational programs and outreach/event planning.

• Experience working with middle and high school students.

• Experience working with diverse groups of students.

• Experience with video editing, videography, and/or social media.

• Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and oral/written communication skills.

• Experience advocating for non-traditional/at-risk students and potential college students.

• Demonstrated ability to use judgment when dealing with confidential or sensitive information.

• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

• Demonstrated interest/experience in working with students of all ages and backgrounds.

• Demonstrated interest/experience in promoting diversity.

• Demonstrated ability and willingness to travel regularly, up to 50%.

• Ability to provide transportation to program staff and participants utilizing university-provided transportation and resources when necessary.

• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.

• Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.

• Willingness to undergo vigorous safety training and background/criminal records checks.
