Associate Director - Portfolio Chief Engineer ESOC/UWMS (Onsite)

Collins Aerospace Systems is one of the world’s largest suppliers of technologically advanced aerospace and defense products. Our Space Systems business unit within Collins provides life support and thermal management systems including comprehensive integrated Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) solutions for NASA, government, and commercial customers. Our solutions enable International Space Station (ISS) missions, satellite and orbital destination platforms, and human mobility missions including the Extravehicular Mobilty Unit (EMU) space suit program. Our products and integrated mission systems offerings enable Low Earth Orbit (LEO), lunar, exploratory, and deep space platforms across a wide range of programs including NASA’s Artemis Program which will establish a sustainable presence on the Moon to prepare for missions to Mars.

Collins is seeking an Associate Director, Portfolio Chief Engineer to lead a collection of programs within our Space Systems business. The specific programs and pursuits enable NASA missions utilizing the EMU via sustainment operations (ESOC) as well the Universal Waste Management System (UWMS) for both the ISS and Orion platforms.

The Associate Director, Portfolio Chief Engineer for ESOC and UWMS Programs acts as the overarching Collins Management System (CMS) Engineering Lead with technical oversight of Design and Development (D&D) programs and support for cross functional Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) tasked to design, develop, procure, assemble, test, deliver, and support customers within an approved budget and schedule. The Portfolio Chief Engineer plays a critical role in being the lead technical focal to the customer and holding accountability for engineering execution of the programs within their portfolio.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in Pursuit & Order Capture (P&OC) and project execution to include D&D of complex electro-mechanical systems. The candidate will have successfully led teams to deliver technically compliant and producible products in accordance with stakeholder requirements within an allocated budget and schedule.

The Associate Director, Portfolio Chief Engineer leads a team with accountability for the cost, schedule, and technical performance of assigned programs.

What You Will Do:

  • Acts as primary technical interface to the Value Stream Leader (VSL) at a portfolio-level

  • Leads a team of Engineering Leads / Program Chief Engineers who provide technical direction for assigned programs and are accountable for program performance

  • Oversees program plans for assigned programs throughout the program life cycle

  • Coordinates the allocation of Engineering and cross-functional resources to assigned programs through peer Engineering and cross-functional leaders

  • Coordinates technical support for Supply Chain activities to support a robust supplier management strategy

  • Coordinates technical support to effectively transition robust designs to Manufacturing Operations and to resolve development-build, production, and test issues

  • Oversees design reviews to ensure project execution and design maturity in alignment with approved project plans

  • Supports root cause investigations, corrective action, and continuous improvement efforts

  • Approves executable program bids that are aligned to customer requirements & needs

  • Leads / supports continuous improvement efforts

  • Encourages and leads a proactive risk-mitigation culture

  • Communicates overall engineering program cost, schedule, EV, and technical metrics against approved baselines

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 12 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations OR Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 10 years experience OR In absence of a degree, 16 years of relevant experience is required

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • BS in an Engineering or STEM degree w/10 + years of experience

  • Advanced Degree in Engineering, STEM, or MBA w/8+ years of experience (desired)

  • Experience in the design, development, and qualification of space-qualified ECLSS, thermal management, or similarly complex electro-mechanical systems

  • Exceptional organizational, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to multi-task with a focus on daily issues and longer-term strategies

  • Solid interpersonal skills with experience in employee management, coaching, and mentoring

  • Strong computer skills to include extensive use of Microsoft Office

  • Experience with Product Line Management (PLM) solutions (e.g. Windchill) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solutions (e.g. SAP)

  • Demonstrated experience in problem solving

The salary range for this role is 143,000 USD - 287,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
