MD Anderson Cancer Center Coding Training Coordinator - Apprentice Coding Program in Houston, Texas

S ummary

The primary purpose of the Coordinator, Coding Training position is:

Facilitate training and auditing services for specific coding area(s) by: designing effective training/audit materials; delivering educational training and/or programs to support user duties; monitoring and evaluating the quality of coded data while maintaining institutional, compliance and departmental policies in accordance with the rules and regulations set forth by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Key Functions

  1. Collaborates with management to determine the best training methodology.

  2. Responsible for planning, developing and presenting an effective training curriculum/process

  3. Maintains evaluation instruments to measure accomplishment of objectives and/or competencies; develops and communicates audit/training schedule

  4. Maintains accurate records of progress; monitors and reports coder quality and productivity; provides managers with training/audit assessment to assist in the identification of additional educational needs

  5. Evaluate correct code assignments to verify accuracy consistent with coding rules and regulations

  6. Identify compliance risks and financial opportunities based on chart reviews to reduce systemic billing errors

  7. Demonstrate ability to work independently, reviews and interpret medical records and applies in-depth knowledge of coding principles to determine potential coding issues and quality concerns

  8. Perform audits to monitor and validate ongoing UT Systems requirements with applicable rules and guidelines.

  9. Promotes development and effective use of skills in areas such as critical and analytical thinking, problem solving, and decision making; conducts needs assessments; provides coder with timely feedback on their progress; provides one-on-one training as needed

  10. Possess a thorough knowledge and understanding of institutional coding policies and procedures; maintains knowledge of ICD-10-CM, PCS, DRG, SOI, ROM and CPT-4 coding guidelines according to CMS, AMA, AHA and other official sources; keeps staff up to date with coding regulations to ensure compliance

  11. Create and maintain departmental policies

  12. May conduct coding and compliance research as necessary

  13. Serves as a subject matter expert for other departmental users

  14. Ability to cover for other trainer(s) and/or auditor(s)

Required Education:

Associate's degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related healthcare field.

Preferred Education:

Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related healthcare field.

Required Experience:

Five years of inpatient/outpatient coding to include two years of coding training experience or with preferred degree, three years of coding experience to include two years of coding training experience. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis.

Preferred Experience/Skills:

Strong auditing experience, strong training experience (CPT, ICD-10-CM), preferred experience of 5 years (Outpatient- Technical and Professional).

Work Schedule:

Hybrid Onsite/Remote schedule. This individual will work onsite for the Coding Training Program.

Certifications/Licenses:

Required one of the following:

Certified Professional Coder (CPC) from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) certification from (AAPC). Certified Coding Specialist - Physician-based (CCS-P) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Preferred Certifications/Licenses:

Dual credentials American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
