Position Summary:

The Finance Specialist will assist faculty and administration in the Department of Statistics with complex and independent analytical general finance and post-award research administration. They will also serve as a liaison with the Dean's Office staff as the primary contact for all Statistics finance transactions.

Financial/Post-Award management duties and tasks include:

  • Reviewing, processing, and reconciling invoices and expenses
  • Providing detailed expenditure and budgetary reports to faculty/principal investigators and senior administration
  • Assisting with budget management and planning
  • Balancing and reconciling all general fund accounts and sponsored projects
  • Processing purchase orders, faculty pcard reconciliation and reimbursements
  • Overseeing the labor redistribution and certification process for all faculty, staff, and students paid on general and sponsored funds

Workplace Requirements :

Hybrid position: This position is offered as a hybrid role, combining both in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change.

Hiring Range: $59,900

*Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree
    • In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted.
  • 2 years of related experience
    • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be subs ituted.

Skills:

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial systems
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to prepare materials and clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences and client groups
  • Project management skills and ability to contribute to a multi-functional team
  • Working knowledge of research administration guidelines, regulations, and policies.
  • Organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple and sometimes competing deadlines

Preferences:

  • Experience working with Oracle ERP system
  • Experience working in an institution of higher education
  • Five years of experience in a higher education environment with proficiency in organizational financial management

Essential Functions:

  • Prepares detailed expenditure, budgetary, and forecasting reports from large complex data sets; reconciles complex financial accounts.
  • Identifies and resolves complex financial and compliance issues.
  • Coordinates and reviews financial/project setup; reviews, tracks, and approves expenditure; monitors budgets; provides data for financial and progress reports; manages and maintains financial records, files, and reports; participates in account close out of all financial activities
  • Performs and designs ad hoc analyses of large complex data sets; reconciles complex accounts
  • Identifies and resolves complex issues
  • Constructs and assembles data for budgeting and decision making; develops conclusions, and presents high-level summary of recommendations
  • Executes internal control programs established by management, research new regulations, and recommends and implements approved changes
  • Develops reports and presentations of complex financial data and metrics for management and third parties
  • Develops and maintains desktop procedures and process documentation for area of responsibility
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Additional Functions

  • Review, process, and submit all invoices and reimbursements
  • Reconcile pcard transactions; serve as the purchasing agent for Statistics
  • Responsible for processing all labor distributions, summer salary and AYT
