Job Summary and Qualifications

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Surgical Support Services, the RN is responsible for the provision of safe and effective care of the perioperative patient.

What you will do in this role:

  • Assumes responsibility for the efficient management of patient in the immediate post anesthesia period.

  • Possesses comprehensive knowledge of clinical components of care required in the PACU to provide for direct patient care.

  • Possesses comprehensive knowledge of medicolegal responsibilities to fulfill position responsibilities.

  • Maintains communication with the Director of Surgical Support Services or designee and Anesthesia staff to ensure that any problems during the immediate postoperative period are promptly communicated.

  • Participates in a rotational call system to provide for continuous availability of patient services.

  • Performs perioperative assessment of patients immediately following surgery as indicated.

  • Maintains patient safety through surveillance of all practices in the PACU.

  • Proficient in the utilization of specialized skills to provide care to patients in the PACU.

  • Utilizes communication skills effectively in working with patients, physicians, and personnel.

  • Provides appropriate information to nursing personnel regarding the patient's status on transfer of patients from the PACU to patient care units.

  • Assist in transporting patients from the PACU to designated patient care areas using safety principles and appropriate body mechanics to prevent injury to patients and to self.

  • Provides direct supervision of other personnel assigned to the PACU to ensure appropriate delegation of responsibilities.

  • Plans, coordinates, provides, and supervises nursing care to promote continuity of patient care in the perioperative period.

  • Communicates effectively with the Director of Surgical Support Services to ensure that any problems or opportunities to improve services in the PACU are addressed.

  • Acts as patient advocate in obtaining care with questioning of orders or other practices as indicated using appropriate channels of communication.

  • Maintains current knowledge of developments and trends in the provision of perioperative nursing care through the use of in services, professional organizations, and other self-directed learning activities.

  • Maintains awareness of current Hospital and Departmental operational standards that impact on position responsibilities.

  • Performs effectively in stressful situations to fulfill position responsibilities.

  • Actively participates in the Department Performance Improvement Program.

What qualifications you will need:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Spt must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date

  • PALS Pediatric Adv Life Supt must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date

  • Registered Nurse must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date

  • Registered Nurse Diploma must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date

  • Previous clinical nursing experience in PACU environment desired.
