KBR is seeking a seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented attorney to join our growing legal team, and to serve as Sr. Director, Legal, and to support our HomeSafe Alliance joint venture in its Global HouseHold Goods prime contract supporting the U.S. Government.

HomeSafe Alliance (HomeSafe)

HomeSafe is the sole household goods move management service provider for the U.S. Armed Forces, Department of Defense (DoD) civilians, and their families under the Global Household Goods Contract (GHC). GHC is a 9-year, $20 billion contract, with performance beginning in February 2023.

The HomeSafe team is dedicated to providing fast, easy, and efficient relocation experiences. More than 300,000 military and government households are relocated every year. Coordinating these transfers is a massive undertaking—and we’re proud to say that HomeSafe is positioned to improve the customers’ moving experience. As the GHC prime contractor and household goods moving service integrator, we provide earlier visibility into upcoming moves and greater network throughput capacity—ensuring household goods shipments are picked up and delivered on time.

About the Role

Reporting to the HomeSafe General Counsel and KBR Vice President, Legal & Contracts, you will be responsible for managing a wide variety of legal matters from start to finish. You will influence the legal strategy, and spearhead management and execution of matters which are critical to Home Safe and KBR’s success. You will work closely with HomeSafe GC, KBR VP Legal GSUS, program and segment attorneys, and business stakeholders across the company to provide legal advice on a wide range of commercial and legal matters.

About You

Accountability: While you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of HomeSafe legal matters you will also be expected to continuously drive the strategy and assess the risk presented by each matter. You will add value to the work performed by outside counsel. You will provide timely reports as requested and ensure there is full transparency on all assigned matters.

Collaboration: You will need to be comfortable working with a wide variety of departments and personalities. When you are advising the business on legal matters and/or risk, coordinating with business unit attorneys, directing outside counsel, conducting fact finding, and you will need to be keen to collaborate and build and maintain strong relationships and partnerships.

Adaptability: You will need to learn on the fly and be comfortable working in a fast-paced work environment. Whether you are directing strategy on a legal matter, presenting to business leadership, facing a deadline, or negotiating a claim, you are rarely flustered, always professional and polished in your approach.

Business Acumen and Financial Awareness: You will continuously assess the needs of the business in your management of legal matters to ensure the strategy aligns with business interests. You will rigorously manage costs by ensuring accurate accruals, negotiating and tracking Alternative Fee Arrangements, updating forecasts, and managing to budget.

Your duties as Sr. Director, Legal will include:

  • Partnering with the HomeSafe business leadership to achieve strong business outcomes while maintaining compliance with applicable laws, regulations and rules.

  • Providing strategic legal counsel and guidance on a wide range of matters relating to compliance with the GHC prime contract and relevant federal regulations.

  • Providing legal counsel and guidance on issues relating to the moving industry, including subcontracts, regulatory compliance, licensing, risk management, and insurance.

  • Reviewing, analyzing, and approving significant or unique contract requirements and provisions to ensure identification of legal and business risks and appropriate mitigation actions.

  • Reviewing and negotiating contracts with customers, vendors, and partners.

  • Staying up to date on relevant federal and state laws and regulations relating to government prime contracting and the moving industry, including the Federal Acquisition Regulations and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations.

  • Advising on and managing legal issues arising from customer and subcontractor disputes, claims, and potential litigation.

  • Liaising with internal KBR and HomeSafe functions such as operations, finance, human resources, supply chain, and customer service to identify and mitigate legal risks.

  • Developing and maintaining strong relationships with the HomeSafe leadership team and functions.

  • Supporting government contracts-related audits and investigations, as well as internal audits and investigations affecting the HomeSafe business.

  • Leading the development and implementation of streamlined, effective contracting policies, procedures, and tools in accordance with company objectives and requirements and industry best practices.

  • Monitoring the quality of work performed by the contracts staff to ensure superior service to the HomeSafe business, and providing the staff with the leadership, resources and training necessary to deliver that service.

  • Drafting and reviewing requests for equitable adjustments and claims.

  • Supervising external counsel for specialized legal matters.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and an active license to practice law.

  • Minimum of ten years of experience practicing law, with some experience preferred in government contracts, transportation or logistics.

  • Strong analytical and business focused problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts in a clear and concise manner.

  • Proficient in legal research and writing.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Must be a self-starter with a proactive approach.

  • Familiarity with government contracting and the moving industry a plus.

Location:

  • KBR currently offers flexible working arrangements, including hybrid, remote working and virtual delivery, to help reinforce our strong commitment to becoming a more socially sustainable company and allow us to provide greater work-life balance and flexibility. This is a remote work opportunity, although KBR and HomeSafe maintain offices through the United States, and the Senior Counsel may utilize those office facilities. Some travel may be required.
