DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
HPW Drinking Water Operations are seeking candidates who can perform:
Complex highly skilled technical work in the installation, operations, maintenance and repairs of industrial control systems.
Troubleshoots, maintains, manages and upgrades existing electrical and instrumentation systems to ensure an economical and safe distribution of electricity.
Researches and analyzes cause of failures; repairs, performs calibrations, replaces and installs new equipment/components and related hardware to maximize functionality.
Provides preventive maintenance to ensure sure safe and clean operating conditions. Prepares and updates various records, logs and reports.
Responds to emergency calls during and after hours for various types of electrical/instrumentation failures and shutdowns.
Organize schedules and monitors work assignments.
Researches technical product specifications.
Inspects field locations to determine appropriate types and placement of electrical components for installation.
May lead or train other technical hardware analyst and perform other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis.
This is a Department of Public Works & Engineering Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires an Associate’s degree (two-year program) in a computer science, instrumentation or electronics discipline or the equivalent, such as certification in a technical/specialty program of up to three years in duration.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Two years of experience in the design, installation, operation, and/or maintenance of a computerized data communications network or industrial control system are required. Relevant experience (as described above) may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Depending upon area of specialty -- may require a valid class "C" Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving. In the Public Works and Engineering Department, may require a valid class "C" or higher Texas Water or Wastewater Plant Operator's license.
PREFERENCES
Preference will be given to applicants with extensive experience in installation, troubleshooting, and resolving technical and systems support issues related to instrumentation, sensors, and other infrastructure components.
Additional preference will be given to candidates with a Journeyman Electrician License and PLC experience. Candidates holding a Groundwater Operations License issued by TCEQ will also be preferred.
Furthermore, preference will be given to candidates who are willing to attend electrical apprentice school to obtain a Journeyman Electrician License.
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive order 1-6.

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification. The salary range for this position is:
