Nuclear Engineer III or Senior Nuclear Engineer – Systems Mechanical

Summary

This is the advancing level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with even greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

This is the career/senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions and take actions to resolve. Senior Engineer represents a level at which career may stabilize for many years.

Candidate should be familiar with Plant Operations, Work Management processes and Fleet Processes. Candidate will be responsible for managing several plant systems (ECCS and/or BOP) in the Operational Support Engineering (OSE) - Mechanical Group. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to troubleshooting, trending/monitoring, advocacy for system issue resolution, work prioritization, refueling outage scoping, etc. Additionally, candidate will support Mechanical Engineering items in Refueling Outages, along with emergent issues encountered by the station.

Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.

  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.

  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

  • Supports troubleshooting and causal analysis for system issues encountered by the station.

  • Monitors system parameters to identify adverse trends prior to component or system failures.

  • Participates in scoping/prioritization of work in online and RFO windows for assigned systems.

  • Performs system walkdowns on required frequencies to comply with License Renewal requirements.

  • Develops System Health Reports to identify and communicate system issues to site management.

  • Supports the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) in assigned role (Mechanical Engineer or Field Monitoring Team).

  • Establishes and develops working relationships with Maintenance, Operations and other departments to promote equipment reliability and system health.

Basic / Required Qualifications

Nuclear Engineer III

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

  • Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience.

Senior Nuclear Engineer

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Engineering

  • Professional Engineer license

Specific Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience

  • In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.

  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.

  • Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.

  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.

  • Occasional overnight travel.

Working Conditions

Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
