Jacobs ESSCA Group Materials Engineer #ADV00095G in Huntsville, Alabama

This position is part of the Space Exploration Group (JSEG) support to the NASA EM32 Metals Processes and Manufacturing Branch under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract to the NASA MSFC Engineering Directorate. Responsibilities: Comply with relevant laboratory safety guidelines and protocols. Work with other MSFC researchers and collaborate with researchers from other U.S. Government labs, the private sector, and academia to: o Create and execute NASA material development plans. o Synthesize materials of interest including refractory metals and ceramic materials. o Understand how manufacturing processes affect materials (e.g., welding). o Understand how environmental factors affect materials (e.g., corrosion). Present research findings including scientific data to peers, managers, and outside collaborators. Interact with non-technical audiences; write research plans and technical reports. The selected candidate: Will work under the guidance of a senior engineer/scientist. Will perform assignments designed to develop professional working knowledge and abilities requiring application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related engineering/science tasks. May be assisted by technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments. o As development progresses and where appropriate, routine assignments may be performed independently and results reviewed for accuracy. o For non-routine work or to resolve difficult problems, others provide techniques and procedures to be applied.

Job Requirements: A degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science or related field is required. A degree from an ABET-accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a minimum of an MS with 0-3 years of experience, or BS with 0-5 years of experience. This position requires experience related to position responsibilities including experience with solidification processes and understanding the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties. Prior experience with nickel, copper, titanium and/or aluminum alloys is preferred. Relevant candidate work experience will be evaluated against ESSCA contract engineering labor categories.
