Battelle Energy Alliance dba Idaho National Laboratory Intelligent Systems Postdoctoral Research Associate in Idaho Falls, Idaho

The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a well-qualified Postdoctoral Research Associate in electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, computational engineering/science, or comparable engineering discipline for the Systems Engineering & Integration Department reporting to the the Resilient and Intelligent Systems Technical Lead. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.

You will focus on the application of diverse systems theories and applications including monitoring, control, agile supervision, computational intelligence (e.g., artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital twins), optimization, data analytics, and uncertainty quantification. Having broad mathematical and computational skills is desirable.

Our team rigorously formulates, develops, realistically demonstrates, and delivers state-of-the-art resilient and intelligent-systems solutions, involving also prototyping applicable architectures and data workflows, to effectively address the ever-growing challenges, opportunities, and technological gaps present in multiple domains including energy and national security.

To illustrate a sample of our research vectors, we have developed practical innovative solutions for the optimal design and operation of thermal/electrical grids, for estimating and forecasting renewable generation in low-visibility systems, for introducing the operationalization of AI techniques (including reinforcement learning) in modern systems, for strengthening the resiliency and risk mitigation properties of systems under threat and adversity, for the resilient integration and operation of hybrid energy systems that incorporate traditional, renewable, and flexible energy resources, and for pioneering unique practical monitoring and interdiction solutions to support nuclear non-proliferation objectives.

We are also working on active cybersecurity and adaptive-recovery topics including resistant and resilient information and inference networks. Furthermore, we are deep into the digital twins domain, developing not only diverse computational elements and advanced functionalities for diagnostics, prognostics, decision making, predictive optimized maintenance, and uncertainty quantification but also multi-fidelity physics models and effective computational machinery typically involving function approximation, compression, and inverse mappings to support bidirectional interactions between physical assets and their virtual counterparts.

Being very much a cross-cutting group, we enjoy the opportunity to work with a broad set of diverse collaborators and customers that includes academia, national laboratories, the Department of Energy, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, and commercial entities.

Responsibilities Include:

  • You are expected to be an asset to our interdisciplinary R&D team and work both alone and as a team member.
  • Work independently, but also take direction from other team members and peers.
  • Produce scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication and presentations of research results at national and international conferences and meetings.

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in electrical (and computer) engineering, aerospace engineering, computational engineering/science, or comparable disciplines.
  • PhD requirements must be completed by commencement of appointment and within the previous 5 years.
  • Demonstrated oral and published written communication skills in English.

Desired Requirements:

  • Experience with mathematical and computational skills.
