Unit Position Summary
The Black River Streamside Research Facility operated through the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University is hiring a Fish Experimental and Culture Seasonal Technician for the 2025 field season. The successful candidate will perform fisheries experimental and culture activities at the Black River Streamside Rearing Facility in support of state-wide lake sturgeon management. The Technician will be primarily responsible for day-to-day experiments and fish production operations at a lake sturgeon streamside rearing facility. Primary Duties
Assist with lake sturgeon production and research at the Black River Streamside Facility in Cheboygan County, MI. Assist in day-to-day hatchery operation including fertilization and care for developing eggs and larvae, food culture and administration, tank maintenance, monitoring water quality, biosecurity, and facility maintenance, data base management of growth and mortality data.
Additional Duties
Assist with field biological sampling of lake sturgeon and collection of stream physical and biological data, building and maintenance of research experimental facility and equipment. Conduct prophylactic and chemotherapeutic fish health treatments under the supervision of the Facility Supervisor according to approved animal use and care protocols. Assist in the tagging and release of juvenile lake sturgeon.
Required Qualifications
Applicants should have a background and interest in fish culture, aquatic ecology and/or fisheries science and be enrolled in a biological degree program such as fisheries, zoology, natural resources, biology or allied fields. A valid driver's license is required. Additional required skills include basic construction, electrical, plumbing, and equipment operation and maintenance. Experience in data base management and analysis including use of Microsoft Office software is required. Applicant should be able to demonstrate abilities to work independently and as part of a team.
Salary: Minimum $15/hr depending on experience. This is a 5-month position (April 1 -- August 31, 2025). The selected applicant will be provided with room and board near the field site in Cheboygan County, MI for the duration of the field season. Necessary field equipment will be provided.
Desired Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Fisheries, aquaculture, or related natural resources field preferred. Open to applicants with one or more years of coursework related to fisheries management, fisheries culture, or fisheries research and one year experience. Preference will be given to candidate who have fish culture experience. Additional preference to candidate with experience identifying aquatic insects
