Digital Manufacturing Engineering (DME) is part of the Corporate Engineering Tech Center (ETC). The ETC is a technical resource for training, standards, project implementation, and the center of engineering excellence for the corporation, providing deeply technical resources to solve the most intractable technical problems in manufacturing. DME provides OT data integration solutions, engineering data standardization/ownership, digital manufacturing solutions, and leads OT Data Integrity and Cyber Security initiatives and standards globally for Lilly Manufacturing. Our team focuses on connecting our facilities (securely) and leveraging the data from those facilities to deliver digital manufacturing solutions to improve manufacturing productivity, data integrity / compliance, quality, and operational excellence. Digital Manufacturing Technologies include digital twins, computational modeling, edge/IoT, and analytics solutions.

Responsibilities:

The Associate Director – Digital Manufacturing Engineering position has overall responsibility for supervision, safety, performance, and development of direct-reporting employees. The team typically consists of 8-12 Lilly engineers plus additional external contingent workers, mainly focused on project delivery of connected facilities (data integration, data historians, etc.). This role will manage and monitor business results, compliance, productivity improvement, and overall customer service for the team, while streamlining processes, prioritizing work, and supporting the overall DME strategy.

The Associate Director role will provide discipline leadership in technology development, knowledge sharing, mentoring of junior talent, as well as provide technical leadership to sites, support major project delivery, support key initiatives led by the tech center, collaborate with Lilly’s MQ IT organization and network with external benchmarking communities. This role will be a member of Engineering Tech Center lead team.

Key Objectives/Deliverables

  • Lead HR processes, including performance management, compensation management, reward and recognition, talent assessment, promotion, recruiting, and succession planning. Coach and develop team members. Support and lead diversity initiatives.

  • Support DME team strategy, business planning, and team building activities.

  • Digital Manufacturing Engineering Discipline and Technical Leadership – Partner with peer groups and manufacturing sites on solution assessments, reuse/replication opportunities, and concept development. Manage tools, engineering standards, master specifications and best practices.

  • Knowledge Sharing – Provide technical coaching and mentoring to Lilly engineers. Document learning through peer-reviewed technical documents. Facilitate shared learning forums such as conferences and user groups.

  • Project Delivery Leadership – Support major capital project delivery through resourcing of key subject matter experts. Drive efficiencies in the delivery processes of connected facilities. Monitor and act on key performance metrics for team performance on project delivery goals.

  • External Influence and Benchmarking - Monitor and influence external industry trends for digital manufacturing technologies and solutions.

  • Support and own global DME sponsored programs and initiatives.

  • Lead governance on standardized global automation data integration solutions.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related science field

  • Minimum 5 years’ pharmaceutical manufacturing experience in engineering or related functional area.

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience with digital manufacturing engineering technologies (digital twin, data integration, data analytics, etc.).

  • Previous supervisory experience or technical leadership

Additional Skills/Preferences

  • Knowledge in data systems, historians, and reporting platforms.

  • Knowledge of project management and vendor management

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills

  • Experience in Capital project delivery

  • cGMP Regulatory knowledge in process or automation engineering

Additional Information

  • This position supports Lilly’s drug product and drug substance network globally and may require US and OUS travel (up to 15%) as well as off-hour meetings due to time zone differences.
