Hanson Professional Services Inc. Construction Observation Discipline Manager in Indianapolis, Indiana

We are currently seeking an experienced leader for our construction observation discipline. Position Objective:

  • Support construction/asset management practice lead (PL) and markets requiring construction observation expertise.

  • Distribute and balance workload across the discipline.

  • Align technical staff reporting to enhance staff development and utilization.

Responsibilities:

General:

  • Supervise associate discipline managers (ADMs) and technical staff to ensure compliance with Hanson HR policies, develop redundant resources, and maintain standardized performance.

  • Collaborate with team members both within and outside the discipline to execute projects and prepare technical deliverables.

  • Forecast technical resource needs, manage workflow and assignments, track and report utilization, and resolve overload/underload conditions.

  • Manage an internal and external professional development program, including budget and cost control, to ensure ongoing technical proficiency, business skills development, compliance with licensure requirements, and awareness of emerging technologies.

  • This is an exempt position with a personal utilization target of 60%.At this assigned target, opportunities for paid overtime will be minimal.

  • Work with technical discipline chiefs (TDC)s and technical staff to position Hanson and the discipline as industry leaders through presentations and publications.

  • Travel, including overnight stays may be required, up to approximately 20% of assigned time.

Soft Skills:

  • Comfortable with communicating technical concepts to assigned staff, project designers, clients, and public stakeholders.

  • Building effective relationships with internal and external client bases.

  • Mentoring and managing early-career and mid-career technical staff.

  • Oral communication and technical writing skills.

To Construction/Asset Management PL:

  • Contribute to strategic planning for current and future technical competencies, emerging technologies, and practices.

  • Develop and manage budgets for the professional development program.

  • Provide input on base compensation, incentive compensation, functional titles, and classifications.

  • Establish and implement staff utilization goals for the discipline.

  • Assist with business operations.

To B usiness D evelopment and Hanson Market Unit Staff :

  • Provide technical support for proposals and pursuits, including go/no-go decisions, scoping, costing, and scheduling.

  • Offer technical support for agreement preparation.

To Other PLs, DMs, and TDCs:

  • Identify skill and staff gaps and overlaps across disciplines.

  • Optimize workflow and technical assignments to balance resources with project needs.

  • Engage with technical staff inside and outside the practice to stay informed about trends and emerging technologies that could impact project efficiency and delivery.

To Hanson H uman R esources /L earning and D evelopment :

  • Collaborate to implement, track, and document compliance with HR policies and staff reviews.

  • Work together to implement, track, and document learning and development initiatives.

  • Collaborate with talent acquisition teams to manage recruiting efforts for discipline.

  • Enhanced production efficiencies in report writing, construction document creation, and construction observation tasks.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 15 years field experience in construction inspection/observation;formal education in the fields of civil engineering or construction managementcan be used to satisfy up to two years of the required 15 years’ experience,with a bachelor’s degree in CE or CM satisfying up to four of the required 15years.

  • Minimum of 5years’ experience managing staff across multiple locations.

  • At least 5 years of experience in the consulting professional services industry within this discipline.

  • Bachelor’s degree in fields of civil engineering, construction management or construction engineering technologypreferred.

  • Licensure as a professional engineer in civil engineering or a related discipline, or other nationally recognized credential is ideal.
