About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):

The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

About the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS):

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) leads Indiana's emergency planning and operations, first responder training, and fire and building safety. The agency hosts state-level training exercises each year and certifies thousands of first responders. IDHS also supports the state Emergency Operations Center (EOC), which leads response and coordination efforts for large-magnitude incidents.

IDHS is also designated as the State Administrative Agency for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and U. S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) grants within Indiana. These funds provide financial and technical assistance to local governments, non-profit organizations, individuals, and families to reduce the actual or potential risk of loss of life or property across Indiana.

Role Overview:

As an intern with the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) division at the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, you will play a vital role in enhancing user support by resolving inquiries and developing a comprehensive FAQ to streamline common requests. This internship will involve utilizing the National EMS Quality Alliance (NEMSQA) reporting and tracking system to compile and create detailed written reports. Additionally, you will collaborate with IDHS staff to facilitate the transition from the NFIRS to the NERIS data entry system in 2025. Finally, this internship will contribute to a comprehensive data clean-up initiative, identifying gaps and ensuring proper reporting while providing guidance and reports under staff supervision.

Salary Statement:

The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those who do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study

  • Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline

  • Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations

  • Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects

  • Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.

  • Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels

  • Ability to conduct well-informed research

  • Ability to solve complex, critical problems

  • Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

    Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

    This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
