Ophthalmology Discovery Research Internship Overview

The Ophthalmology Discovery Research Intern within AbbVie’s Discovery Research organization will help support target identification and early drug development of therapies for eye blinding diseases. This intern position is an exciting opportunity to make a significant contribution to our in vitro retinal cell painting and model development for the discovery of new therapeutics.
This position will be based in Irvine, CA, and the intern will have the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment to leverage cutting-edge technology. The intern will support research activities, applying cellular or molecular biology techniques in collaboration with experts in eye care research. The intern will also contribute to the implementation of experiments for discovery and validation of targets in ophthalmology.
Key responsibilities include:
Perform high content imaging to support in vitro retinal cell model development
Help to develop cell painting technique for target identification and validation
Plan, collaborate, execute, and summarize results from the studies undertaken
Analyze and interpret experimental data, generate reports, and present findings to project teams
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a PhD in Biology, Bioengineering or other related degree with a passion for imaging and/or molecular biology techniques
Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship
Hands-on experimental experience within biology-related research
Effective communicator who can adapt and be flexible when required
Motivated team player with a can-do attitude
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills to deliver project updates and summaries.
Preferred Qualifications
Expected graduation date between December 2025 – July 2026
Exposure to ophthalmology and retina research and related disease
Experience with immunohistochemistry and high content imaging
Exposure to image analysis is highly desirable
