Job Description

The Toxin Innovation Group at AbbVie seeks a highly skilled and experienced associate scientist II with the experience in genetic engineering of microbial organisms. The successful candidate will play an integral role in supporting our efforts to design, engineer and optimize microbial strains for both aesthetic and therapeutic applications, driving the advancement of our product pipeline and contributing to the overall success of the company.

The ideal candidate will have training on designing and implementing molecular cloning techniques for the modification of microbial genomes to achieve specific phenotypic traits, preferably with anaerobic bacteria. The candidate will be able to maintain the laboratory environment and ELN documentation in compliance with regulatory and company expectations.

Key responsibilities:

  • Design and execute experiments to engineer microbial strains for enhanced production of target molecules or proteins.

  • Learn and apply genetic engineering tools and techniques for microbial strain engineering.

  • Conduct molecular biology techniques, including DNA manipulation, cloning, and gene expression analysis.

  • Perform microbial strain characterization, including growth kinetics and product analysis.

  • Collaborate with other team members to identify and prioritize target molecules and develop strategies for strain improvement.

  • Analyze and interpret experimental data, prepare technical reports, and present findings to internal team members.

  • Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records, including experimental protocols, data, and observations.

  • Ensure compliance with safety guidelines and maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment.

Qualifications

  • Industrial or academia experience in microbial strain engineering.

  • Direct experience with molecular biology techniques, such as DNA extraction, PCR, cloning, and gene expression analysis.

  • Familiar with genome editing techniques, including CRISPR/Cas9, homologous recombination, and gene knockout.

  • Experience with cultivation techniques and screening methods for microbial strain characterization.

  • Familiarity with microbial fermentation processes and downstream processing is a plus.

  • Knowledge of NGS library preparation workflow is a plus.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary research teams.

  • Effective communication and presentation skills, with the ability to collaborate and work in a team-oriented environment.

Education & Experience:

  • Master’s in microbiology, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, Synthetic Biology or equivalent field or Bachelor’s Degree with 3+ years of related work;

  • Industrial experience is preferred in biotech or pharma discovery research

Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
