Jacobs Mid-Level/Senior Instrumentation & Controls Systems Design Engineer in Irvine, California

We are looking for a dedicated Instrumentation & Control Systems (I&C) Design Engineer in northern California based out of Redding or Sacramento. As part of our team, you’ll have the chance to work on projects that bring innovative solutions to our municipal clients’ water challenges locally and worldwide.

To excel in this role, you should have experience with Process & Instrumentation Drawings (P&IDs), control narratives, specifications, network drawings, panel drawings, and instrumentation selection. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential. You must be able to work effectively within diverse team environments. Hands-on knowledge of control system software for SCADA systems, including PLC and/or HMI programming, is beneficial. Additionally, having a professional engineering registration (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Chemical) or the ability to obtain one in California within 6 months is desired.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Chemical Engineering.

  • Active California Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or ability to obtain one in California within 6 months.

  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in control system design for water, wastewater, manufacturing, and/or other similar utilities.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

  • Outgoing self-starter with good networking skills.

  • Experience with P&IDs, specifications, control schematics, control strategies, online instruments, basic Ethernet networking, and control signal lists (I/O lists).

  • Experience and/or willingness to learn PLC Programming, HMI programming, SQL, Scripting Languages, development of control system architecture, and SCADA systems.

  • Ability to work in multidiscipline groups for larger projects.

  • Collaborate with our global team across different time zones and occasionally work non-traditional hours to effectively connect with international colleagues to support our local clients.

  • Some local travel is required to meet with clients, attend meetings, and other support activities.
