Job Description

We are seeking an experienced engineer to play a cross-functional role in the ideation, assessment, and development of novel drug delivery technologies as part of AbbVie’s Combination Products team. This role is primarily in support of the AbbVie neurotoxins and eye care portfolios. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills to support engagement with primarily internal teams in developing an exciting new generation of groundbreaking delivery technologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Works on Early-Stage Combination Product Development (CPD) technologies to support the AbbVie pipeline. Participates in development and optimization of future delivery technologies according to pipeline needs, starting from identifying unmet needs through design concept and validation. A key aspect of the role is to ensure high quality science, technology, and deliverables to support development and lifecycle management of AbbVie drug delivery systems.

  • Conducts research and development activities to invent/improve novel drug delivery systems, with input to strategic decision-making. Critically evaluates delivery system capabilities and contributes to CMC team strategies and plans that align with corporate business objectives. Decision-making will often require assessment and integration of physical chemical properties, formulation science, engineering, analytical, and device technical information in conjunction with the project strategy.

  • Applies an in-depth understanding of relevant scientific, engineering principles to design and support solutions across multiple initiatives including:

  • Execution of rapid development cycles. Applies principles of Innovation Engineering and Product Innovation to lead and support AbbVie Internal Innovation teams.

  • Helps to manage a curated portfolio of cross-functional technical problems/needs and relevant internal and external approaches positioned to address these.

  • Thoroughly documents and communicates results through authorship of technical memos, reports and presentations. Authors Records of Invention and documentation in support of AbbVie’s IP portfolio.

  • Engages with external partners to ensure utilization of AbbVie internal talent and expertise to maximize patient benefit. An important aspect of this role is to support an internal culture of innovation, including application of Innovation Engineering formalisms and leading structured ideation sessions, and generally to promote scientific and entrepreneurial thinking, encourage creativity and manage quality and results with respect to science, time, budget and resources.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in a relevant scientific, engineering, or business discipline is required, with minimum 8 years (with bachelor’s or master’s) or 0 years (with PhD) of relevant experience ideally including work in combination product or medical device development programs

  • Facility with relevant computer programs including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and Teams, ideally with some demonstrated facility with coding and/or AI platforms such as ChatGPT

  • Ability to work with sketches and/or CAD representations of early prototypes and capacity for spatial visualization is important in this role

  • Excellent English language written and verbal communication

  • Strong whiteboard (or digital equivalent) skills and ability to facilitate and document group discussions, and/or enthusiasm to develop these skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a diverse team setting

  • Demonstrated command of relevant scientific principles and analytical skills, with particular emphasis on localized delivery such as intradermal routes of administration

  • A strong sense of urgency and ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a highly dynamic and fast-paced environment

  • A desire and capacity to learn, drive continuous improvement, and develop novel solutions to problems

  • Willingness to be based from AbbVie's Irvine offices minimally 3 days a week

  • Ability to travel 5-10% of the time

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
