Siemens Logistics designs, installs, tests commissions and operates baggage handling systems (BHS) for domestic airports. The BHS is critical to air travel safety and airport/airline profitability. Each BHS is a customized solution optimized for the location, purpose and bag traffic. The solution must have safety, value, dependability, maintainability, efficiency and sustainability.

Position Overview

We currently have opportunities for a mid level undergraduate or graduate Field Controls Engineer to initially support the operations and maintenance of the new state of the art baggage handling system (Early Bag System) at the Houston International Airport, then support other Siemens Logistics Customers nationally.

The ideal candidate will have excellent academic background, several years’ experience in commissioning or supporting industrial controls systems and be able to apply the knowledge learned in engineering schools and in previous jobs to solve problems and suggest innovative solutions. After the initial period where the candidate will work side by side with the controls commissioning team learning the intricacies of the system, the candidate will be responsible for proper day to day operation of the control system. This includes monitoring the health of drives, (VFDs, Servos etc.) the PLCs, the control networks and other control components, troubleshooting and correction of controls issues, system changes and upgrades. He will be located at the IAH airport in Houston Texas and will be the person on the ground for a larger support team located in Dallas and Germany.

This will be the initial assignment, once the support for the IAH project is over, the candidate will learn the rest of the company products offering, he will initially work side by side with other Siemens engineers in order to learn all the intricacies of the position. Ultimately he will be supporting other customers, directly or while being part of a team of engineers.

Most of the support can be done remotely, but a lot of traveling (nationally) is expected for this position.

Responsibilities -- IAH Support period

Working in a Matrix organization and reporting to the Engineering Manager and under the direction of the Airport Baggage Handling Operations manager, the candidate will be required to participate in testing and commissioning of the automated Early Bag System. That includes configuring the on site control system, (networks, PLCs, drives etc.), support the electrical installation team when issues arise, , red mark electrical schematics as needed, troubleshoot electrical and controls issues, test the system functionality, troubleshoot PLC programs and configure drives as needed to achieve specified system functionality. The candidate after the initial training period, will be the point of reference for every BHS system controls topics for the Early Bag System at IAH. He will need to be capable of interface with the local stake holders, plan and prioritize the interventions, research issues and possible solutions, reach out to off site support team for additional support.

Typical activities include:

  • Interface and coordinate with other disciplines/stakeholders

  • Supervise less experienced team members during repairs/upgrades

  • Network configuration and troubleshooting -- (Profinet)

  • PLC changes download, testing and troubleshooting -- Siemens Simatic S7 (TIA)

  • VFD/Servo (Siemens G115D and S120) troubleshooting, reconfiguring

  • HMI program downloads -- Siemens WinCC

  • Smart devices troubleshooting

  • Electrical or controls issues troubleshooting

  • Provide post commissioning stand by support

Responsibilities -- Post IAH Support period

Working in a Matrix organization and reporting to the Engineering Manager, the candidate main responsibility will be to support the existing customers when issues arise, implementing small changes, replacing equipment, generally improving the operation of the baggage handling system. Time permitting, the candidate will participate in new design, commissioning and testing of new systems.

Typical activities include:

  • Interface and coordinate with customer technical representative

  • Supervise less experienced team members during repairs/upgrades

  • Controls System troubleshooting

  • Siemens Logistics machines (HSD and VSU) integration support, upgrades and troubleshooting.

  • Network configuration and troubleshooting -- (Profinet/Profibus/EthernetIP/ControlNet/DeviceNet)

  • PLC changes download, testing and troubleshooting -- Siemens Simatic S7, Allen Bradley 5000

  • VFD/Servo (Siemens G115D and S120, SEW Movimot, Nord Link….) troubleshooting, reconfiguring

  • HMI program downloads -- Siemens WinCC, Allen Bradley Factory Talk View

  • Smart devices troubleshooting

  • PLC functionality hot fixes and upgrades

  • Support with equipment replacement, upgrades.

  • While on site, working odd hours shifts might be required.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years experience in commissioning or maintaining industrial automation systems

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Must be capable of moving thru the maintenance only areas of the system, this includes stairs and ladders.

  • Undergraduate or Graduate Degree in Electrical / Controls / Automation / Robotics / Instrumentation Engineering/Technology

  • Basic computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Access)

  • Strong command of English Language both written and verbal a must

  • Working knowledge of Siemens Simatic S7 (TIA, Drives, Profinet, Profisafe)

  • Working knowledge of Allen Bradley tools (Rs Logix 5/500/5000, Factory Talk View)

  • Proficient in troubleshooting industrial networks.

  • Proficient in troubleshooting drives (VFD/Servo) issues

  • Proficient in troubleshooting electrical circuits (24VDC to 480VAC)

  • Proficient in troubleshooting controls issues
