Job Posting:

The VP Sustainability will play a pivotal role in shaping and implementing our sustainability strategy across the organization towards a net zero carbon future. This senior leadership position is responsible for driving the integration of sustainability principles into our business operations, ensuring alignment with our corporate values, stakeholder expectations, and regulatory requirements. The VP Sustainability will work closely with the NAM ExCom, Region leaders, and various departments to develop and execute initiatives that enhance our performance and create long-term value. This position reports directly to the CEO for North America with a dotted line to the global Managing Board member for Sustainability & New Technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan that aligns with the company’s vision and goals. Provide strategic guidance to the executive team on sustainability related matters.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with various departments, including Operations, Legal, HR, Finance, and Communications, to embed sustainability considerations into business processes and decision-making.

  • Innovation and Impact: Drive innovation in sustainable practices and initiatives that reduce environmental impact, improve commercialization of sustainable products. Provide leadership for unlocking new technologies.

  • Legacy Portfolio: Provides leadership and effective oversight of reclamation activities at non-operational sites across the country to mitigate environmental risk.

  • Large Scale Land Development Projects: Ensure maximum value creation and long-term sustainable use of key HM land holdings.

  • Policy Development: Lead the development and implementation of policies and practices that promote sustainability, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility. Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards.

  • M&A: Support large acquisition and disposal activities.

  • Industry Leadership: Represent the company in industry leadership roles and oversee company representation across product lines on codes and standards associations.

  • Training and Development: Foster a culture of sustainability within the organization by providing training and development programs for employees at all levels.

  • Sustainability Reporting: Oversee the preparation and publication of the company’s sustainability reporting, ensuring transparency, accuracy, and compliance with global standards.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, sustainability, or a related field. Master’s degree or relevant certification is preferred.

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in ESG, sustainability, corporate responsibility, or a related field, with at least 5 years in an executive leadership role.

  • Proven track record of developing and implementing successful ESG strategies and programs.

  • Strong understanding of relevant reporting frameworks, regulations, and best practices.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and drive organizational change.

  • Thought leadership in sustainability and a commitment to making a positive impact.
