This position is based in Ithaca, NY, within the ILR School on the campus of Cornell University.The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University is excited to announce the opening for an Admissions Counselor - Admissions Associate I within our Undergraduate Admissions office.

The Opportunity:
The Admissions Counselor is responsible for counseling and advising prospective students and parents on matters of admission, assisting with the recruitment and selection of first-year students, advising the ILR Ambassador program, and assisting in the management social media and web communications.


Cornell enrollment representatives across its administrative offices and within its colleges, schools, and units share a mission to partner with students, faculty, staff, and alumni, supporting strategic enrollment goals so that any person can find instruction in any study.Enrollment services are carried out through a matrixed organizational system in which staff in Division of Enrollment offices serve as partner and resource for colleges, schools, and units and all staff serving enrollment functions engage in regular collaboration.


Candidate Profile:
We are seeking candidates who appreciate and will engage in the following, and not limited to:

  • Participate in the recruitment and selection process of first-year students
    • Assist the Director and Senior Associate Director with the reading and evaluation of first-year applications.
    • Demonstrate understanding and operate in compliance with relevant federal, state and university regulations, policies, and best practices.
    • Maintain updated data bases for recruitment.
  • Develop, plan, and execute admissions-focused events
    • Represent ILR and the University at high schools and conferences to recruit prospective students and establish relationships with key admissions stakeholders.
    • Assist with the planning and management of on-campus recruitment & yield events as well as information sessions. Greet and assist visitors throughout the year and admitted students and their families in April.
  • Counsel and advise prospective students and parents on matters of admission
    • Serve as the primary contact and resource for prospective first-year students, families, school counselors, and other support providers. Provide timely responses to inquiries and communicate regularly to ensure the completion of applications.
    • Remain up-to-date on ILR curriculum and course offerings, internship, research, and study abroad opportunities, and other information required to successfully recruit and guide prospective students.
  • Advise the ILR Admissions Ambassadors
    • Recruit, hire, train and supervise 25-35 volunteer students to conduct information sessions, run events, coordinator mailings, run focus groups, and produce photography for marketing/social media. Ensure the completion of assigned tasks.
  • Admissions Communications
    • Create and coordinate communication to prospective students via social media. Co-develop and implement social media campaigns, ensuring the use of consistent messaging across platforms, and monitor communication on platforms, contributing as appropriate.
    • Work with Central Admissions office and the ILR marketing & web department as needed to ensure accuracy and timeliness of ILR admissions information regarding events.
    • Represent Undergraduate Admissions office on the ILR social media team.

What we need:

  • Bachelor's degree and up to two years relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively with multiple stakeholders (faculty, staff, parents, alumni, prospective students, and guidance counselors).
  • Must demonstrate exemplary written and oral communication, organization and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced academic environment.
  • Ability to handle high level of discretion and sound judgment with confidential information.
  • Must have demonstrated service orientation that will contribute to outstanding customer service.
  • Possess excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Must be proficient and have experience with new communication methods (social media, website content management systems, email CRM systems, Skype, etc.).
  • Participates and represents several committees.
  • Occasionally adapt, combine or make improvements in an existing service, product, process or program.
  • Responsible for making decisions within prescribed limits and/or providing input to others for decision-making.
  • General supervision with some interpretation of established policy and procedures required.
  • Event management with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Successfully take and act on initiatives
  • Contribute positively to an inclusive environment and interact with integrity.
  • Proactively seek self-development and coaching opportunities.
  • Support ILR's vision and mission.

You will be a top candidate with our preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working in higher education with demonstrated passion for it.
  • Experience advising or leading student groups.
