The Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science (Cornell Bowers CIS) is a dynamic community committed to addressing global challenges. It houses three academic departments: Computer Science, Information Science, and Statistics and Data Science. The college pioneers cutting-edge computing and information technologies while also exploring their societal and human impacts.


Cornell Bowers CIS is home to more than 200 employees, which includes nearly 120 faculty. To meet growing student interest in the college's majors and courses, Cornell Bowers CIS is investing significantly in expanding its faculty by 50% in the coming years, along with enhancing its staff infrastructure. This growth aims to promote research excellence, expand emerging fields, and foster cross-disciplinary collaboration across the university.


The Department of Information Science examines the interactions between people and technology, how technology is shaping individual lives and social groups, and how the ways that people use new technology can shape new developments. Information Science currently has around 700 students enrolled among the three colleges for our undergraduate program and approximately 200 students in the graduate programs, split between the professional master's (MPS) and PhD programs.


Under the direction of the Director of Administration, this position will partner with the Director of Graduate Studies and the Information Science Field to oversee a growing graduate program. This includes counseling, advising, and recruiting, graduate students located on two campuses - the main campus in Ithaca and the Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island in NYC.


What You Will Do:

The Associate Director of Graduate Programs counsels, advises, and may assist with recruitment, and/or select students and prospective students on matters of admissions. Additionally, they will research and assist in developing strategies to identify and recruit high-quality candidates and students in priority groups; provide advice and assistance to the Director in long-range planning and admission strategies and operations. They will counsel and advise prospective students on how to apply for admission and provide academic advising services to current students and potential majors; utilizing confidential information and conducts confidential conversations to provide these services.


Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Communicate with prospective students throughout the admissions process.
  • Provide advising to students regarding difficult and/or sensitive situations; serve as academic advisor to students.
  • Assist with review of students' academic information, review students' academic records, initiate contact with these students, provide follow-up advising interactions.
  • Directly interact with the faculty to determine GRA funding and TA assignments.
  • Coordinate with the Sponsored Research Administration Center (SRAC) to track funding and fellowships.
  • Supervise the Student Services Assistant IV who provides administrative support to the IS graduate programs.
  • Plan and coordinate student orientation programs, PhD Visit Day and/or commencement activities; assist in planning and delivering programs.
  • Liaison with the Information Science Graduate Student Association (ISGSA) to address their concerns, plan activities and provide guidance on how to spend their department funds. This includes organizing a town hall event each semester, and ensuring the proper department representatives are present to discuss pertinent topics.
  • Act as liaison between the Director of Graduate Studies the Bursar's office, the Graduate School, the College of Engineering Registrar's Office and other University offices.
  • Demonstrate understanding and operate in compliance with federal, state and university data privacy and security regulations, policies, and best practices relating to the access and use of student records.
  • May serve on college and university-wide committees dealing with issues on diversity
  • Participate in college/university efforts to evaluate the academic and personal success of multicultural students on campus.
  • Represent graduate programs at conferences promoting diversity and inclusion.

Cornell Bowers CIS is committed to offering a flexible, hybrid work location arrangement, depending on a position's role and responsibilities. This Student Service Associate II (SSA) position will be primarily an on-campus, in-person position with a minimum of two - three days per week on campus during the academic year. Additional flexibility is allowed during the student breaks times and summer months. Additional on campus work hours may be needed to support special events.


Enrollment representatives within Cornell's colleges, schools, and units regularly collaborate and partner with the Enrollment Division to accomplish the University's enrollment goals.


What We Need:

  • Bachelor's degree with 2 - 4 years of work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must project a professional image and demonstrate the ability to diplomatically handle a wide variety of situations.
  • Exceptional customer service skills and proven experience in event planning.
  • Must be a self-starter, working independently while also demonstrating success working in a team environment.
  • Excellent oral/written communication, organizational and time management skills are essential.
  • Excellent computer skills with knowledge of a variety of software programs including the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and handle confidential information.
  • Familiarity with Cornell student services systems (ex: College Net, Peoplesoft).

What We Prefer:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field with more than 4-6 years of experience.
  • Previous experience working with Cornell's Graduate School.
  • Previous experience working with faculty and students in an academic environment also preferred.

The position will typically allow for the flexibility to work remotely 2-3 days per week at a location of employee's choosing within the United States. The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside New York State.All Cornell Bowers CIS staff are required to work the recognition ceremonies, which usually take place on Friday and Saturday during the Memorial Day weekend.
