Genesee & Wyoming Bridge Inspection Analyst in Jacksonville, Florida

SUMMARY:

This position is primarily responsible for operation and maintenance of the electronic structures inspection and management system, also known as ATOM, including, but not limited to, initial inventory population through collection and reporting of annual inspection details in order to ensure the safety of all G&W railroad structures in North America. As a support role this position is responsible for the scheduling, inspecting, recording and reporting of the assigned structures to ensure the safety of G&W operations and the public at large. The successful candidate will be able to operate in a fast paced, demanding environment and be able to deliver comprehensive structures inspections on time and in line with federal, corporate and regional requirements. Excellent organizational skills, resource management and attention to detail are essential in this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage the structures inventory data to ensure all of the pertinent details and information are accurately reflected and immediately available for analysis.

  • Ensure the integrity, accuracy and currency of the data contained within ATOM.

  • Facilitate inspector use of the ATOM - develop / teach ATOM user tools.

  • Provide ATOM Help Desk services to internal users.

  • Build the annual inspection program within ATOM.

  • Facilitate inspector compliance with GWI inspection reporting procedures.

  • Support all aspects of the inspection process to ensure no structures are missed or timelines exceeded.

  • Coordinate with G&W Regional Bridge Managers for inspection report delivery and review.

  • Ensure all finished structures inspection reports are timely, complete and accurate.

  • Facilitate all inventory, priority, work, schedule and other analysis and reporting of data contained within ATOM.

  • Provide appropriate, consistent and timely communication with internal and external customers including purchasing, regional engineering, suppliers and other departmental interfaces.

  • Proactively plan, troubleshoot and communicate issues to ensure inspection reports are on-time and within budget.

  • Develop, and grow regional relationships vital to the success of all inspection projects.

  • Schedule and coordinate inspections for assigned territory.

  • Coordinate with regional personnel regarding inspection schedules and plans.

  • Conduct detailed and accurate inspections of assigned structures noting conditions, making repair recommendations and assigning repair priorities for all components of the structures.

  • Climb all aspects of the bridges to determine and report the conditions.

  • Prioritize findings and defects in line with federal and G&W requirements.

  • Ensure prompt and appropriate immediate action is taken for each high priority finding to ensure the safety of G&W trains, employees and the public.

  • Ensure inspection data is promptly recorded into G&W’s ATOM System.

  • Assist in emergency situations requiring the inspections of any G&W structures.

  • Accompany other team inspectors on detailed or large scale inspections as needed.

  • Other projects and duties as assigned by the Director Structures Inspection.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • 5-10 years of experience in structures inspection, structures management, and/or engineering.

  • Thorough working knowledge of the railroad industry, FRA regulations, AREMA recommended practices, the AREMA Bridge Inspection Handbook, and FAA requirements for safe UAV operation.

  • Thorough working knowledge of how electronic data sets are constructed.

  • Strong data analysis skills.

  • Ability to interface with software developers and articulate system needs.

  • Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and excellent decision making skills.

  • Ability to meet deadlines in a fast paced team environment.

  • Ability to accurately express structure conditions using written and oral communication.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with regional personnel, senior management teams, employees, customers, railroads, regulatory agency officials, and the general public.

  • Ability to climb structures, work at excess heights, and work in all weather conditions.

  • Ability to operate UAV’s and other equipment or machinery related to bridge inspection.

  • Ability to report to work with minimal advance notice and work flexible daily schedules, including weekends (as dictated by travel distance and inspection schedules).

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR CREDENTIALS:

  • Required: High School Diploma or GED required

  • Required: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and a basic understanding of database management.

  • Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited school of engineering
