University of North Florida Groundskeeper in Jacksonville, Florida

Nature of Work: This is work providing services to help keep the campus maintained in a suitable manner.

Typical Responsibilities: Provides campus beautification efforts which could include custodial work (e.g. sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes and buffs floors, etc.) recycling work, or groundskeeping duties (e.g., Rakes, grades, excavates and prepares grounds. Cuts and maintains lawns and/or grass. Removes soil, rubbish and leaves from grounds. May make simple repairs to buildings or equipment, and reports more extensive damage. May replaces light bulbs. May operate various types of equipment (e.g. buffer, trimmers, hedgers, mowers and sweepers). May dispose of contaminated trash and waste materials. During declared campus emergencies, this position may be required to perform specific job related duties at a designated off campus location or place of residence.

Required Qualifications: Completion of ninth (9th) grade required; HS Diploma preferred. Some positions may require possession of a classified driver's license appropriate to a type of vehicle operated.

This is work performing landscape maintenance duties including, but not restricted to trash collection, maintenance of indoor and outdoor public areas including courtyards, postal areas, dumpster areas and Housing area proper.

Daily empty trash containers located in Housing areas, clean ash can and empty. Maintain the courtyards by removing any trash or debris. Continually keep the dumpster/recycling area clean and maintained. Remove any trash or debris from the courtyards, stairways or sidewalks in and around Housing Area. As directed, clean the outdoor cooking grills in and around the Housing Area. As directed, use the leaf blower to clean debris from the A/C units in Osprey Village. As directed, use the gas powered vacuum to maintain the courtyards and parking lots. Weeding eating, edging asphalts and cement surfaces a)Edge sidewalks, borders, parking lots, curbs and other permanent turf-adjoining surfaces b)Weed eat areas where no mower can reach c)Use blowers to remove debris from cement and asphalt surfaces d)Check for proper fluid levels and operation e)Wear eye and hearing protection f)Clean equipment g)Possess the ability to carry a weedeater or blower for period of time Plant Bed Maintenance a)Weed plant beds b)Rework soil in plant beds by adding the fertilizer, peat and other amendments c)Mulch plant beds d)Wear eye and hearing protection e)Trim trees and bushes f)Clean equipment g)Possess the ability to carry a weedeater or blower for period of time Equipment/Shop Maintenance a)Daily inspect the vehicle assigned and maintain proper records b)Follow required PM schedule c)Use assigned vehicle only in the performance of assigned duties d)Return assigned vehicle to maintenance area daily e)Steam clean and grease equipment f)Assist in minor equipment adjustments and repairs g)Provide other service to equipment as directed h)Assist loading and unloading and moving or bags of fertilizer, pesticide and grass seed Landscape Construction a)Operate a sod cutter or a vibrating packer, checking for proper fluid levels and operation b)Use rakes, shovels, and other hand tools for finish grading work c)Plant trees and bushes, lays sod and mulches beds d)Remove dead/dying/unwanted trees and plants e)Clean up debris f)Possess the ability to control awkward powerful equipment when in use in uneven terrain This position is designated as a Tier 2 respondent for designated campus emergencies and events. In the event of a declared campus emergency, the position incumbent will make every effort to return to campus when directed.

Knowledge of safe trash disposal techniques Knowledge of landscape maintenance techniques Knowledge of the procedures and methods used in proper tree maintenance Skill in safety and effectively operating riding mowers Skill in using supplemental landscape maintenance equipment such as power edgers, blowers, power hedge trimmers, etc Ability to us hand tools such as rakes, shovels, lopping shears, pole saws, leaf blower or gas powered vacuum and the like during landscape construction, modification, and maintenance Ability to lift and carry loads of 50 pounds of more (bags of fertilizer, bags of grass seed, sod, etc); to push small equipment such as walk behind edgers, mowers and blowers Ability to climb stairs, bend or stoop in order to collect trash or debris Ability to walk long distances on level and unlevel terrain while using equipment Ability to get on and off riding mowers, tricksters and tractors quickly and with ease in cases of emergency Ability to understand University rules, regulations, policies and procedures Ability to communicate information effectively, in English, both verbally and in writing Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others Ability to work outdoors in all type of weather and within extreme temperature ranges Visual ability, corrected, to observe people and/or vehicles moving through the work are in order to redirect work or equipment to avoid injuries to the people or damage to the vehicles
