Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a highly responsible professional coordinator position in the General Microbiology Unit of the Microbiology Laboratory of the Bureau of Public Health Laboratories.

Assists the Medical Scientist IV in planning, organizing, and conducting the operations of the General Microbiology Unit. This will include the quality assurance and quality control of both the clinical and environmental sides of the laboratory. The staff of technical and professional laboratorians perform moderate and highly complex (CLIA ’88) procedures on numerous types of specimens submitted for bacteriological identification. The environmental water testing laboratory is regulated by EPA and NELAC for moderate testing involving water.

Coordinates and assists in the evaluation and implementation of new bacteriology procedures and the initiation of new services as required to best serve the public health. Also, reviews and periodically updates test procedures and SOPs, as required.

Provides testing coordination and technical expertise for proficiency testing and evaluations.

Coordinates the handling, shipping, and processing of all isolates and specimens that come into the laboratory. Reviews all reports and assists in reporting results.

Coordinates, reviews and where necessary, performs quality control required to ensure the accuracy and precision of all bacteriological laboratory tests.

Communicates with the branch laboratories, universities, hospitals, private laboratories, physicians, and county health departments concerning the interpretation of the test results and provides information about all services available.

Makes schedules for and participates in holiday and weekend work activities. Assists whenever and wherever needed to ensure completion of work and performs confirmatory CG testing as needed.

Performs other duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of terminology, principles and techniques used in analysis and testing.

Knowledge of procedures, techniques & equipment used in lab testing and analysis.

Skill in the use of lab equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.

Qualifications:

Public Health or Clinical Laboratroy License, bachelor degree, 5 to 10 years of experience.
