Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:

Registration as either a Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor or a Provisional Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist by the Louisiana Board of Licensed Professional Counselors.

NOTE:

Pursuant to Act 484 of the 2014 Legislative Session and effective May 1, 2015, Counselor Interns are now called "Provisional Licensed Professional Counselors" (PLPCs) and MFT Interns are now called "Provisional Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists" (PLMFTs).

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from the Social Service Counselor job series by presence of recognition as a Licensed Professional Counselor-Intern or a Marriage and Family Therapy Intern by the Louisiana Licensed Professional Counselors Board of Examiners.

Differs from the Professional Counselor 2 by the absence of greater independence and more complex caseloads.

Examples of Work

Provide individual, family, and group counseling/therapy to children, adolescents, and adults with mental health and substance use disorders based on individualized treatment plans. Use evidenced based practices and an integrated treatment models to treat/counsel individuals served toward achieving their identified goals. Serve as a liaison and coordinator between the individual served, their family, and other agencies/providers. Collaborate with the treating psychiatric provider and multi-disciplinary team to facilitate care. Provide clients and families with education regarding psychiatric and behavioral health conditions and related services. Identify areas of need and make appropriate referrals to ImCal programs and/or community services that best meet those needs. Keep informed about community resources and make appropriate referrals for supplemental supports and services. Evaluate, monitor, and document progress in treatment. Conduct transition and discharge planning. Maintain required documentation on individuals served in ImCal’s designated electronic health record.

Conduct comprehensive psycho-social assessments which result in accurate diagnoses and functional/interpretive summaries. Use evidenced based screening and diagnostic scales to thoroughly assess for the presence and severity of various disorders and associated risk. Use clinical skills, supervision, and consultation to identify psycho-social factors to be addressed in counseling/therapy. Determine situational and/or supportive counseling/therapy needs and identify the strengths and vulnerabilities of the individuals served, which may have clinical significance in the therapeutic intervention. Develop appropriate in-depth, individualized, time-oriented goals and objectives during the treatment planning process and create safety plans for those at greater risk of harm.

Provide crisis screening, assessment, and intervention to individuals who are at an increased risk of harm. This includes collaboration with the psychiatrist or other prescribing provider, and the family, with linkage to higher-level care, such as hospital emergency departments, inpatient substance use disorder treatment facilities, or other social/community services.

Attend clinical unit meetings and in-service trainings. Complete required training and continuing education as mandated by ImCal policy and clinical license. Communicate with various agencies: inpatient treatment facilities, court/judicial system, Probation and Parole, DCFS, and clients, and family members in an effort to ensure continuity of care for individuals served. Provide testimony and recommendations in court cases, on behalf of the individual/family served.
