Juneau School District Information Technology Officer (JobID:9145) in Juneau, Alaska

Location:Information Technology (Districtwide) Full Time Position:(1.0 FTE)

SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Director of Operations, the Information Technology Officer is responsible for the overall management of technology systems for the Juneau School District. Provides leadership in the development and implementation of enterprise information technology; including computer hardware, infrastructure, wireless and wired networks, telephony, data storage, server systems, camera systems, and software. Leads in planning, acquiringand implementing systems to support distributed and centralized education and business operations in cost-effective and efficient methods. Establishes policies and tactical planning for incorporating functional and technical improvements in the Juneau School District's technology systems. Leads and facilitates communication between staff, management, vendors and other third-party relationships. Oversees, evaluates, and ensures system security, business continuity and disaster recovery planning and implementation. Reports to the Director of Administrative Services and co-chairs the Technology Committee. Works with the Administrative Services Director and Finance officer on E-rate. This is a Classified Exempt position and not represented by a bargaining unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with major coursework in computer science, information systems, business administration or a closely related field.
  • Five years of professional experience in any or all of the following: systems administration, systems analysis, computer programming.
  • At least two years of supervisory experience over computer professionals and/or project leaders.
  • Ability to travel to multiple sites during the workday.

Knowledge of:

  • Strategic planning including short and long-term goals and objectives
  • Organizational leadership abilities
  • Budget preparation and financial forecasting
  • Current professional certifications related to IT systems, software, hardware, data exchange, security and telecommunications
  • Applicable laws and regulations

  • Operate a personal computer and related software

  • Oversees District-wide IT strategic planning and procedures.
  • Identifies and Defines short and long-term IT strategy, goals and objectives under general guidance from Cabinet. Leads departmental input and technology planning processes.
  • Assist departmental and school leadership with projects and planning as they relate to IT.
  • Coordinates and directs all projects related to the selection, acquisition, development, and installation of major information systems; including computer and network hardware, software and mobile technology.
  • Provides advice on evaluation and selection of information systems to ensure appropriate investment in strategic and operational systems ensures alignment federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Regularly evaluates existing technology, information systems, and staffing to ensure alignment with educational and business goals.
  • Researches new technology and solutions.
  • Review software and hardware acquisition and maintenance contracts soliciting involvement and participation of other management members as appropriate.
  • Negotiates purchase agreements.
  • Develops and maintains disaster recovery plans in alignment with fiscal and strategic goals and objectives.
  • Maintains strong relationships with external resources to ensure technology systems are promoted, created, supported, and maintained where network connections and/or dependencies exist (e.g. Powerschool, Google, Unity).
  • Ensures third party agreements are properly maintained while minimizing ongoing costs to the Juneau School District.
  • Other duties as assigned

Compensation: This position is a 12-month, permanent position. Salary: Range N on the Classified Exempt Salary Schedule. The district offers an excellent benefit package including; health, dental, vision and life insurance as well as additional, optional wellness and retirement options. This position is classified exempt and not a part of any bargaining unit.

Selected hire will be fingerprinted at the applicant's expense and fingerprints forwarded to the Alaska State Troopers and the FBI for a records check.
